Meet Ella Martine

We were lucky to catch up with Ella Martine recently and have shared our conversation below.

Ella, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
I think I’m very lucky to have a lot of different interests and passions within the entertainment industry, whether it be writing and creating music or telling stories through my screenplays. There are so many mediums for me to work with, and writing blocks happen with all of them. If I’m stuck on one thing, I can pivot and work on another. Being constantly creative and working on new ideas across the board helps get me unstuck in a lot of ways. Taking breaks to enjoy things that don’t have to do with the industry is also really helpful, like spending time with friends or playing video games, little things that help my mind reset. I think getting out of the house is also a big one; sitting at a bar to write for example. It’s amazing how people-watching can inspire your next piece of work.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’ve got a lot of exciting things that I’m working on right now that I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of. Some of it is independent, and others are collaborations. My own personal projects include my music, primarily folk with cinematic elements; it all ties into film, really. I’m also working on a novel that I started when the writer’s strike began- that’s something I don’t have all the time in the world to work on but I’m very excited about it nonetheless.

I categorize myself as a horror writer, it’s what I studied in college and one of my greatest passions. I am collaborating with some amazing people, working on independent scripts we hope will get through to production within the next year or so. I wish I could talk more about those, but all I can say is that they’re sure to provide the audience with a good spook 🙂

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I don’t know if I necessarily have three specific ones, but the main thing is to just do or put out what makes you happy. Selling out for the sole purpose of being famous is the wrong way to go about it, in my opinion. It works for some people, but for the people out there who genuinely want to make art because they love doing it, they should always put out the things they’re proud of. It may not be what’s mainstream now, but there is always a demographic who will find something they love about it. I’ve put out music that I was unhappy with just because I thought people would listen to it, and it never felt gratifying. I also used to take down music that I loved but didn’t get that many streams, and I still regret it. If you find what you’re passionate about, hone in on it and make it the best that you can. Someone will love it, but more importantly, you’ll be proud of it.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking for people to collaborate with, whether it’s music or film. I love bouncing ideas off of the people I work with, coming up with new and fresh ideas, and making plans to bring those ideas to life. Everybody has their own fresh perspective, and if I only focused on my own work and own ideas I feel like I would be putting myself in a box.

If you’re interested in working on horror or psychological thriller or learning more about the kind of work that I do, feel free to reach out over Instagram. My DMs are open!
