We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ellen Busch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ellen, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
In (dis)Empowered, I wrote that my resilience comes from a mix of deep personal drive and the strength of my family’s unwavering support. My parents played a crucial role, encouraging me to never quit on myself—a message that built the foundation for my perseverance. When others wrote me off, I channeled my anger into something powerful: determination and grit. Transforming negative emotions into fuel for my journey has been a defining part of my strength. It’s proof that resilience can be forged through adversity, turning anger and frustration into the energy needed to push through obstacles.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
In (dis)Empowered, I share my journey from struggle to empowerment, and this story is at the core of everything I do professionally. I offer life coaching services, where I help others unlock their potential, embrace their strength, and overcome their own struggles. I know firsthand how transformative resilience and self-belief can be, and I’m passionate about helping my clients tap into that same power within themselves.
What excites me most is seeing people change their lives by reclaiming their personal power and moving past the obstacles that once held them back. There’s something incredibly special about guiding someone to the realization that they are their greatest resource and that they can create the life they desire, no matter what has come before.
In addition to coaching, I’m also an international podcast guest and author of (dis)Empowered, where I dive deep into the challenges of finding resilience and turning hardship into purpose. I share the tools and mindset shifts that helped me along the way, with the goal of helping others do the same.
My brand is about transformation—turning pain into purpose and empowering individuals to live fully. I believe that no matter what anyone is facing, there is always a path forward, and I’m here to help them find it.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey in (dis)Empowered, I would say the three most impactful qualities or skills that shaped my path were:
1. Resilience: The ability to keep going despite setbacks, challenges, and doubters was crucial. There were times when it felt like everything was against me, but I pushed through because I was determined not to quit. Resilience isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you cultivate by continuing to show up, even when it’s hard.
To build resilience, start by setting small goals that stretch your comfort zone. Every time you face a challenge and push through, your resilience grows. Surround yourself with supportive people who remind you of your strength.
2. Self-awareness: Understanding who I am, my values, and what I truly want was key. It allowed me to make decisions that aligned with my purpose, even when others didn’t understand. Self-awareness gives you the clarity to navigate through difficult situations with confidence.
Spend time reflecting on what really matters to you. Journaling, meditating, or simply taking moments of stillness can help you connect with your inner self. The more you understand yourself, the easier it is to make choices that serve your future.
3. Emotional Intelligence: I learned how to manage my emotions, particularly anger, and use them as fuel instead of letting them control me. Emotional intelligence helped me build better relationships and respond to challenges more effectively.
Practice emotional awareness by checking in with yourself throughout the day. When emotions arise, take a moment to observe them without judgment. Over time, this will help you respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.
For those early in their journey, one way to grow is to lean into the discomfort of growth. These qualities take time to develop, but they are invaluable. Be patient with yourself, and remember that each step forward, no matter how small, is progress.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me, as shared in (dis)Empowered, was their unwavering support and belief in me, no matter what. From a young age, they taught me the power of resilience and persistence. When life became difficult, when I felt defeated or when others doubted my potential, my parents were always there—reminding me of my worth, encouraging me to keep pushing forward, and assuring me that I was capable of achieving whatever I set my mind to.
What made their support so powerful wasn’t just the constant encouragement, but their unshakeable faith in my abilities even when I struggled to see it myself. They never told me to give up or settle for less than my best. Instead, they instilled in me the belief that my success didn’t depend on the opinions of others or the obstacles I faced, but on my determination to keep going.
This foundation of belief became a driving force in my journey. It gave me the courage to confront difficult moments, like when I felt misunderstood or when people wrote me off. Instead of letting those moments break me, I used them to fuel my drive to prove them wrong. My anger became a source of power, transforming into the determination and grit that helped me keep moving forward.
Their support gave me a strong sense of self, and that sense of self was critical in helping me navigate through challenges. It was their example of unwavering love and encouragement that showed me how to believe in myself, how to trust that I could create my own path, and how to stay resilient even when things seemed impossible.
In essence, my parents didn’t just help me through hard times—they gave me the tools to thrive in the face of adversity. Their impact continues to resonate with me as I guide others through their own journeys, sharing the lessons they taught me about perseverance, self-belief, and never giving up on your dreams.
