We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elley Ringo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elley below.
Hi Elley, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
I developed my confidence and self-esteem in spite of the haters.
I’ve actually gained my confidence through failure and through being bullied and put down. Without failure there is no growth. When we fail, if we’re smart we will keep track of the failure and learn the ins and outs of why we didn’t succeed using that method. You make small tweaks until you get it right. We have to learn to rely on ourselves in the toughest times to pull ourselves up. When I was a teen and young adult I was told that I wasn’t good enough, I was told I wasn’t pretty enough, and I was told that it wasn’t my time, that I should find something different to love. I chose not to believe them. Even though their words hurt and it felt like daggers, and to be honest it definitely left scars. But I always told myself I could. I knew that if so many people have braved so many drastic things throughout their lives, then I could do the same. Being in this industry comes with a lot of pushback a lot of NOs with very little feedback. You have to believe in yourself to keep going and I’ve built my confidence through my belief in myself. Through overcoming people that have told me no, through people that told me that I wouldn’t be good enough. I guess I was determined to prove them wrong and in doing so I found courage, self-esteem and my value. My goal is to keep failing up.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an actress and I am also a geologist who creates YouTube videos.
I’ve loved acting since I was a kid. But I could never pursue it until I became an adult. Four years ago I was contacted to be on a reality TV show looking for gold. At the time I thought to myself this could be great I could combine my acting skills with my love of geology. I accepted the offer quit my job that I had been at for nine years and moved across the world to Greenland for three months to film the television series Frozen Gold. When I got back to the states, I dove in heard first and full-time into acting as well as content creating and I’ve been doing it ever since. I’ve been shooting movies all across the United States. I had a small supporting role in the film Camp Pleasant Lake that premiered in June on the STARZ network and it spent two weeks at the number one streaming spot on STARZ. This fall I’ll be going to Chicago to shoot a movie, in the spring I will be going to New York to film another movie. I just finished principal Photography on The Case of Acacia Thatcher an independent film, where I play Acacia. I have two movies being released next year, one of them being a lead role in the film Alien Storm directed by Adam Wreth, and I’m very excited to see it.
My geology YouTube is also taking off. I will start filming for my own geology TV series next year,
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Determination, tenacity and willingness.
These things have always gotten me through hard times. I’ve always been determined to prove who I am. I’ve been determined to make the impossible possible. My tenacity drives me and I’m brazen and bold and I’m not afraid to make a fool of myself. And I’m willing to try everything once or almost anything lol. I’ll never jump out of a perfectly good airplane!
You have to be willing to be humble, you have to be willing to go grab somebody a drink, their food, they’re closes. You have to be willing to do the dirty work. You have to be willing to sleep in your car. You have to be willing to put in the time.
If you feel like you are looking for a skill. Go do something brave and something you would never do, see if a hidden skill raises its head, you have to be willing to earn that skill. You’ll never know unless you do. And you’ll never fail -up unless you try.
Remember that roadblocks are for a reason. No is not an answer it’s an opportunity. And if you can get your head through the door your body will follow. Basically just don’t give up.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I would have to say a couple things one of them is know who to trust and know who not to trust and when to keep your mouth shut .
And two always get it in writing.
These things may seem simple to see coming or to prepare for, but they’re not. People can pretend to be your friends that have false intentions. You may fall for this simple trap. I’ve had these things happen to me. It was probably more my want for people to be my friends that blinded me to their true motives. But in falling for these small mistakes I share things with people that people use against me. You trust them with personal details, your life goals, your aspirations and they use them to their advantage and basically leave you in the dirt. It’s something that we all should’ve learned in grade school right? But as we become adults the black and white of friendship is harder to navigate. Sometimes people that are deceptive in the industry don’t have your best intentions at heart. So guard yourself. At the same time be willing to share what you can, but not everything. If you feel uneasy about anything just keep your mouth shut. You don’t need to share every detail.
The second thing is be sure to get it in writing. If people are talking to you about a project or future projects and you’ve “signed” on to be on these projects even if it’s a friend don’t just take their word for it. If it’s something legit and it’s something that people truly mean to fulfill they will have no problem getting it in writing for you. It’s a mutual agreement and it’s essentially a code of conduct that you both can follow. If people talk a big game, Promise you the world and that “you’ll get paid” but aren’t willing to put it in writing they’re probably just pulling in your leg, they’re going to screw you right out of the deal. Watch your back.
