Elvin, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

As a Black street and documentary photographer, I offer a distinct perspective through my photography, revealing how I perceive the world around me.

My images capture the essence of everyday life, showcasing the beauty, complexity, and diversity of my surroundings. Whether it’s freezing candid moments on the streets or delving into the stories of individuals and communities, I aim to provide viewers with a window into my unique vision.

In spaces where I may be the only Black photographer, I navigate confidently, asserting the value of my perspective and the importance of diversity in the industry. Through my work, I seek to foster connections and understanding across cultural boundaries, inviting audiences to experience the world through my eyes.

My goal is to inspire curiosity, empathy, and appreciation for the diversity of human experience.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m Elvin Catley, I am an Artist and a street/documentary photographer based in Oakland CA.

I enjoy capturing the vibrancy of life all around me, from the bustling streets to the intimate moments of everyday Life.

What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to share my unique perspective with the world and its viewers

Each photograph tells a story, offering a glimpse into the rich and diverse human experience. Whether it’s the laughter of children playing in the park or the quiet dignity of a street vendor at dusk, I strive to capture the essence of life in all its complexity.

What sets my photography apart is its deeply personal nature. Drawing inspiration from my own experiences and cultural background, I aim to offer viewers a window into my world. Through my images, I seek to foster empathy, understanding, and connection across cultures.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Reflecting on the profound impact skateboarding has had on my journey in photography, I’ve come to recognize the invaluable qualities and skills it has instilled in me.

Beginning at the age of 10, drawn in by the allure of its coolness and the camaraderie of friends, I embarked on this journey that would shape my perspective in profound ways.

Through the years, skateboarding became more than just a hobby; it became a catalyst for growth, pushing me to perceive the world through a unique lens. It taught me resilience in the face of failure, urging me to persistently seek new approaches and perspectives in every endeavor.

If there’s one piece of advice I could offer to fellow photography enthusiasts, it would be this: perseverance is paramount. In the pursuit of mastering this art form, persistence is your greatest ally. Embrace the challenges, learn from setbacks, and above all, never lose sight of your passion. Keep pushing forward, for it is through relentless dedication that true mastery is achieved.

Absolutely, I’m genuinely enthusiastic about collaboration in all its forms, especially when it involves traveling either domestically or internationally to document events or spotlight local artists, like painters, musicians, chefs, and more.

My love for travel and genuine curiosity about other cultures inspire me to delve deep into diverse experiences and authentically capture how different communities interact with the world around them. Whether it’s a grand-scale project or something more intimate, I’m sincerely committed to capturing the essence of life and human connection, celebrating the beautiful diversity that enriches our global tapestry.
