We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elvira Zamora a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elvira, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I’ve learned to breathe in power and not the intimidation when I am the only one in the room that looks likes me. I do not make myself smaller but instead I speak in my strong tone, I do not hide my attitude but amplify my voice because I am not a robot, I am not an actor, I am a real person that is fueled by passion. The projects that I take on this days are all fueled by passion, motivation and intentional.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m an upcycle designer, keeping fashion slow, intentional and earth friendly. I’m also the creator of the first Chicano Elegance Gala, a movement originated in celebration of all that the sub-culture influences to pop culture. Our stories have been taken, our stile has been re-packaged and our music is underground, but with this movement packaged as celebration as resistance has taken our message from LA to the East Coast and I could not be more proud of this community that without their contribution, it would not be possible.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The 3 important factors in my journey have been to have a professional quality in everything I do, I also have the skill to research and investigate when it comes to the production of an event and lastly the knowledge that I continue to learn every single day, the lessons are handed without compromise but it is our responsibility to pay attention.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents taught me to be human, fear is a tool that you can use to also elevate. Fear is a double edged sword, it can keep you from stepping out of your house, but if you train your mental, it can also push you to get out of your house and give this life the best you got before it passes you by.
