Meet Elyssa Matson

We recently connected with Elyssa Matson and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Elyssa, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I haven’t always been confident. It’s something that’s been built over years of growth. I believe it came from being willing to ask questions, observing closely, dropping my ego, and learning when to set boundaries. I’ve pushed through barriers by reading contracts, civil code, taking classes, researching anything I wasn’t sure about, and asking even more questions. For me, confidence comes from knowledge.

The more you know, the less you second-guess yourself. The more you trust your gut, the more you can rely on your intuition to guide you, for all the moments when doubt creeps in, knowledge fills the gaps. That’s what’s always kept me grounded and moving forward, knowledge.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I run a boutique real estate brokerage and property management company (EJ Properties) in Orange County. We specialize in residential investment properties: single-family homes, condos, and multi-units. We also handle sales and help our clients grow and manage their portfolios long-term. Right now, I’m in the middle of a 1031 exchange where I’m representing the client on the replacement purchase side of the transaction, and we have several other investors making strategic moves to expand. It’s exciting to be part of that bigger picture and help guide them through it.

We’ve been called a one-stop shop, and that’s exactly what we’re building. Clients don’t just come to us to buy or manage one property, we aim to be their go-to real estate partner, like how someone has a trusted doctor or attorney. Whether it’s navigating landlord-tenant law, handling a tough repair, advising on an acquisition, or prepping for a sale, we cover it all.

What I love most is the variety. No two days are the same. We’re always solving problems, staying ahead of the curve, and making sure things run smoothly. I also care a lot about education, our clients receive a bi-monthly newsletter and have access to a growing library of articles and resources. I want people to feel informed and empowered, not overwhelmed.

Right now, we’re growing. I’m expanding the management portfolio, and building out the sales and commercial side of the business. There’s been a lot of interest in commercial real estate lately, and that’s where we’re putting energy as well. It’s an exciting time, and we’re focused on doing it right, not just fast.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Curiosity. I’ve always been willing to ask questions and dig deeper when I don’t know something. That curiosity has helped me grow faster and avoid major mistakes. My advice: don’t pretend to know it all. Be okay saying “I don’t know”, then go look it up, read about it, or ask someone who does. You’d be surprised how much ground you can cover just by being curious and consistent.

2. Attention to detail.
In this business, details matter: leases, contracts, timelines, compliance, accounting. Overlooking small things can lead to big issues. I’ve learned to slow down when it counts and double-check my work. For someone starting out: develop systems that keep you organized, and take pride in doing things the right way the first time.

3. Resilience.
Things go wrong, people flake, deals fall through, properties have problems. You have to be able to pivot, stay calm, and keep going. Resilience is something you build by not giving up the first, or the fifth, time something gets hard. If you stick with it and stay focused, you’ll come out stronger on the other side.
