Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emanuel Cuestas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emanuel, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Hey everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share how I found my purpose in aviation a journey that has been both challenging and rewarding. Like many of you, my passion for flying started with a deep fascination for aircraft and the freedom of the skies. But over time, I realized that aviation is more than just flying it’s about discipline, precision, and the responsibility that comes with it.
For me, finding my purpose wasn’t just about logging hours in the cockpit or earning new ratings. It was about embracing the mindset of a pilot being adaptable, always learning, and constantly striving for excellence. There were moments of self-doubt, setbacks, and unexpected detours, but every challenge taught me something valuable.
What solidified my purpose in aviation was the realization that this field is not just about me it’s about the people I fly with, the passengers I may one day carry, and the trust that comes with being a pilot. Whether it’s ferrying aircraft, working toward a First Officer position, or chasing new opportunities, I know that every step brings me closer to becoming the best pilot I can be.
If you’re still figuring out your purpose, trust the process, embrace every lesson, and never lose sight of why you started. The sky is not the limit it’s just the beginning.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My Journey in Aviation and the Arts
Aviation has always been more than just a profession for me—it’s a passion, a challenge, and a way of life. As a commercial pilot with multi-engine, single-engine, and seaplane ratings, my journey has taken me through various experiences, from flight training and ferry flying to pursuing airline and charter opportunities. Every flight is an opportunity to learn, grow, and refine my skills, and that’s what keeps me motivated every day.
What excites me most about aviation is the constant pursuit of excellence and precision. Unlike many industries, aviation demands a high level of discipline, adaptability, and situational awareness, which makes every day different. Whether it’s navigating complex airspace, managing weather challenges, or making split-second decisions, the thrill of flying never fades.
Right now, I am focused on expanding my career into Part 135 charter operations and airline pathways, with the ultimate goal of becoming a First Officer and later a Captain at a major airline. I’m also deeply interested in ferry flying and seaplane operations, as they provide unique challenges and the opportunity to fly in diverse environments.
My Background as an Artist
Beyond aviation, I have always been deeply connected to the arts. Growing up in Honduras, I discovered a passion for music, singing, and songwriting, which became a huge part of my identity. As an artist, I’ve had the opportunity to write and perform my own music, drawing inspiration from my cultural roots and life experiences. Music, like flying, has always been a way for me to express emotions, tell stories, and connect with people on a deeper level.
The balance between aviation and music has shaped me in unique ways. Flying gives me discipline and precision, while music allows me to tap into my creativity and emotions. Both require dedication, practice, and an ability to perform under pressure.
Looking ahead, I want to continue growing in both fields—advancing my aviation career while also creating and sharing more music. For me, passion isn’t limited to just one path, and I believe in pursuing both with the same level of commitment and heart.
If you’re passionate about aviation, music, or both, I’d love to connect! Blue skies and high notes!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three Key Qualities That Shaped My Journey
Looking back on my journey in both aviation and music, there are three key qualities and skills that have had the most impact on my growth and success:
1. Discipline & Resilience
Aviation and music both require discipline and the ability to keep going despite setbacks. In aviation, training can be challenging, requiring precision, strict adherence to procedures, and continuous learning. As a pilot, I had to develop strong study habits, time management, and the ability to stay focused under pressure. In music, there were times when self-doubt and obstacles made me question my path, but persistence allowed me to improve and keep pushing forward.
Advice: For those starting out, develop a growth mindset—failures and setbacks are not roadblocks but opportunities to learn. Whether you’re working toward a pilot’s license or refining your artistry, stay committed, practice consistently, and don’t be discouraged by challenges.
2. Adaptability & Problem-Solving
Both in the cockpit and in the studio, things don’t always go as planned. In aviation, weather changes, mechanical issues, or unexpected challenges require quick thinking and problem-solving skills. As a songwriter and performer, inspiration doesn’t always come easily, and adapting to different creative environments is essential.
Advice: The best way to develop adaptability is to embrace discomfort and new experiences. Step outside of your comfort zone—whether that means flying in different conditions, learning new aircraft systems, or experimenting with new styles of music. Being adaptable will set you apart in any field.
3. Communication & Connection
In aviation, clear communication is essential for safety—whether with air traffic control, crew members, or passengers. In music, communication is about connecting emotionally with an audience through lyrics, melodies, and performances. Being able to express myself effectively, build relationships, and inspire others has helped me navigate both fields successfully.
Advice: Practice active listening and clear communication in all aspects of life. In aviation, this means developing CRM (Crew Resource Management) skills to work effectively with others. In music, it means understanding your audience and telling a story that resonates. Learn to connect with people, and opportunities will follow.
Final Thoughts
For anyone early in their journey, whether in aviation, music, or another passion, my biggest piece of advice is: stay persistent, embrace challenges, and always be open to learning. Your journey is unique, and every experience—good or bad—will shape you into a stronger, more capable person.
Believe in yourself, keep growing, and never stop chasing your dreams.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Overcoming the Challenge of Finding a Job in Aviation
Right now, the biggest challenge I’m facing is finding a job in aviation. The industry is competitive, and securing the right opportunity takes persistence, networking, and continuous self-improvement. While I have the qualifications and passion for flying, getting my foot in the door with a company that aligns with my career goals has been a struggle.
To overcome this challenge, I’m taking a proactive approach by focusing on several key areas:
1. Expanding My Network
Aviation is a tight-knit industry, and many job opportunities come through referrals and connections. I’m actively reaching out to pilots, recruiters, and industry professionals on LinkedIn, at aviation events, and through pilot communities. Building relationships with people already in the field increases my chances of hearing about job openings and receiving valuable advice.
2. Refining My Resume and Applications
I’m continuously updating my resume and cover letters to ensure they stand out to employers. Tailoring each application to highlight the skills, experience, and certifications that match specific job postings makes a big difference. I also seek feedback from mentors and professionals to improve my application materials.
3. Broadening My Search
While I have specific career goals, I’m also staying open to different opportunities that can help me gain experience. This includes looking at Part 135 charter operations, SIC (Second-in-Command) positions, and ferry flying. Gaining experience in different areas of aviation will strengthen my qualifications and make me a more competitive candidate for future roles.
4. Continuing Skill Development
Even while job searching, I’m staying engaged with aviation by continuing to learn. Whether it’s practicing flight procedures, studying for additional ratings, or staying updated on industry trends, I want to ensure that I’m always prepared and improving as a pilot.
