Meet Embracing Oceans

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Embracing Oceans. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Embracing Oceans, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Burn out is serious in an industry where independent artists are more-so the accounting department, marketing department, social media development, etc. A lot of the time the music we learn for jobs is not something that feeds our soul but we like to approach everything with the outlook that whatever we play is developing something new on our instrument and we play every job to the best of our ability, taking no short cuts. When we start to feel the burnout from running the business, we like to step away and get back to the music. With each single or album comes a dumbstruck of administrative duties so refocusing into writing is a safe haven. But even still sometimes we need to outsource some help. It can all become a bit much but returning to the creative process is always a natural way to keep it alive. Lastly, we don’t work on one thing for too long. The times that we have lingered on a tune or idea for too long, we have always hit a wall like the life has been drained from it. We like to keep forward momentum. That to say, if we wake in the middle of the night with an idea for something that we had shelved, we use that energy to open it back up.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We are a dynamic duo from backgrounds of musical polarity; one extending from a lifetime career in rock and music production, and the other based in classical and jazz studies. It is this polarity that their diverse and expressive style can be attributed. Comprised of Brazilian guitarist and producer, Edi Roque, and classical oboist and jazz vocalist, Skye Butterfield. We unify our worlds exploring poetic lyricism and harmonic complexities while highlighting some extremely unique instrumental soloing. Our upcoming single, Boogieman, will be released this Halloween! Boogieman’s thrilling gross and haunting guitar riffs turns a childhood nightmare into an infectious melody with ominous lyrics.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First and most important is practice makes better. We both live by this rather than “practice makes perfect”, as we know perfection is intangible and the pursuit of perfection can turn toxic, especially in the creative process. We believe practice is the most important part of art because the quality of your art rests in your hands only, so only you have the power to make your art shine the way you wish.

Second is to have knowledge of music production. We are blessed because Edi is a producer with a lifetime of experience; but I was new to production when we met. Of course we could communicate musically but when it came to production there was gap. The best thing I did was educate myself on production so I could better communicate and assist when it came to the mixing and mastering of our work. This goes beyond a duo, you will have to communicate about production at some point in your music career so learn the language.

Third is to learn the business strategy within your specific industry and stay up to date on industry models. It is ever-evolving and as quickly as you blink, things have changed. The way to stay relevant is to stay in touch with how your industry is currently operating.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We are always looking for collaborations with visual artists. Our library is full of projects that need visuals from different mediums. We are open to partnerships of all kinds as long as it fits our platform. Our website or IG is the best way to get in touch with us.
