Meet Emerald Johnson

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emerald Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emerald below.

Emerald, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Keeping your creativity alive can definitely be a challenging thing, especially when you have a busy life like work, school, or kids. But it’s so important to make sure you’re finding ways to do so. Creativity has always come naturally to me. As a kid I was building sculptures out of glue and toilet paper rolls, up cycling old clothes, and playing around in my older sister makeup. I knew I loved fashion and art. Nowadays creating new looks and experimenting with different styles is still one of my favorite things to do. Those things can be as simple as browsing through the clothes section at the grocery store or using recycled items around your house. Pinterest and TikTok are great options for inspiration! Following that, it’s important to do what you feel is right. Coloring, painting, working with clay, sewing, and so much more can help keep a little creative spark in your life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you are just skimming over this article and don’t know who I am, my name is Emerald and I am a fashion enthusiast and a model. I’ve always loved clothes and different styles of them. Learning about where different items come from, pairing unlikely things together, and creating new things out of the old. I’ve always loved emo and alternative fashion, painting my nails black at 9 years old. It’s been a struggle at times to stay happy in the world and not water down who I was on the inside. But once I got through that initial phase I was changed forever. I love the clothes that I wear today. I adore the music I listen to and the people I meet because of it. This is why I also strive to inspire people to stay true to who they are. You can only be happiest when you’re becoming who you’re meant to be.
I am a model with Barbizon Modeling and Acting! I completed my course about 2 years ago and have done a lot of practice since then. I hope to soon do my first professional shoot. This is something I’ve always dreamed of doing as well and my mother has always been supportive of me.
I did not have an easy upbringing. There were a lot of obstacles in my youth, and they are still coming, but you have to push through in order to make yourself happy in the end. It’s okay to take some time to process or cry if you need to. But you have to be the one to bring yourself out of that moment and push yourself forward. You will thank yourself in the future.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

A few things I have learned in my almost 20 years of being alive is that you can’t force someone to like you, use your recourses, and your true friends are your best friends. Keep them close.
It’s so important to surround yourself with people that allow you to truly be you. People who make you feel comfortable, and laugh, and cry happy tears. People you’re genuinely excited to see and who understand your problems. Who don’t judge you. Or those who do and can laugh with you, not at you. Those friends are usually the best. Even if you tend to be more of an introvert we as humans are designed to have human connection. Go make a few great ones. It can be difficult but there are plenty of resources out there these days for all ages! There’s apps, groups, local places to go and meet people. Along with that, using all of your resources is something I had to do in life and definitely would not be where I am today without them. If you need health insurance, try to get it. Food stamps? Try to get it. Therapy or going to the food bank? Do it. Everyone is just trying to survive the day, as hard as that can be to do now, and overcoming feelings of shame or anxiety about doing things that you have to do in order to live happy and healthy is so important to get rid of.
One of the toughest battles someone can go through in life if wanting to be accepted by society, and sadly everyone goes through that. But you HAVE to get through it. Everyone on this planet is different. It’s important for us to be different to keep a balance in this world. And when you come out at the end you will be a much stronger, happier person. That battle never truly stops either. There’s always going to be someone who tries to make you feel bad in your skin but 9 times out of 10 it genuinely has nothing to do with you. You have a right to be whoever you want to be, as long as you’re not hurting other people of course.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am absolutely looking for more people to collaborate with! I live in the Charleston area so it is definitely a bit hard out here. However, if you love fashion, makeup, and anything alternative and risky then we would be perfect partners! I don’t want to be an ordinary model posing for a JCPenney magazine. I want to be modeling black lipstick, mini skirts, and platform shoes. While doing so, I want to work with people who can relate to not coming from much and who know what it’s like to go through a bit of a tough life. Personal experiences are always the best way to connect with others in my opinion. So if you’d like to do a photoshoot, have some clothes you’re creating and need a model for, or need a guest in your video I’m all for it! Just email me at EmeraldJohnsonC3@gmail.com
