We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emerson Geter. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emerson below.
Emerson, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
Risk taking is a major aspect of building confidence and discipline. In my opinion, once a person takes risks, they must be discipline in order to not allow their risk to overcome them. Having known this beforehand helps me take risks when the time presents itself.
In the music industry we take risks very often, and that is the reason why we have lots of new talent and new forms of music and ways to consume it. I suppose I learned my ability from Mathew Knowles who I still can remember to this day would say, “You have to take risks to get what you want. If you get all the way to the cliff, are you going to jump, or will you turn around and walk the other way?” He used to tell me that I would never know what is waiting for me down there if I didn’t jump. So in essence, I welcome taking risks, with preparation, confidence, and discipline.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
These days I am focused on bridging the gap between professionals within the music industry and the film world. With the relationships we have formed throughout the years in the TV and film industry, we want to allow those creatives to be able to use our in-house resources for music contacts, music composition, and song writing.
The best way to sum up our brand is very similar to SONY. We work in the music industry directly with artists and we work directly with filmmakers to help them accomplish their vision.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Of course this may sound cliché but never give up on your dreams and be very persistent. Also, make sure you have a plan that can be measured. As important as is to have a plan, it is more important to be able to measure individual goals when working toward executing your plan.
The most impactful qualities or skills I can lean on is being persistent, be practical, and have mental peace and stillness. I believe these are important qualities to accomplish any goal that a person wants. Lots of people overlook the mental aspect of everything, but its important to me to stay organized mentally to be able to stay on track. They all are tied together with one another.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Haha! You just want me to give all the game away don’t you? Well I could say this, there are lots of books that I believe has played an important role in my development as a music professional, film producer, and leader. The Emancipation of Slaves Through Music, The Power of a Positive Team, and thats all for now. The first one was a great book to help everyone understand how music was created and got to where it is today, and the other is great for leadership.
