We recently connected with Emi Gibson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emi, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
I think of the people who have supported me on my journey, My parents (Especially my dad), my fiance and my friends, always cheering me on and supporting my passions. At the end of the day, their cheers speak louder than some random people on the internet booing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
On the professional side I have been running Burnsville anime club and hosting cosplay events since 2017, recently I additionally started a new venture at MNeurodivergent as their Event manager for South metro Minnesota. Burnsville anime club is a south metro 14+ anime club that meets in Dakota, Scott and Hennepin county libraries as well as attends and collaborates with south metro cosplay conventions.
MNeurodivergent is a Minnesota non-profit organization that specializes in creating events and activities that are open to everyone and especially friendly and welcoming to those with disabilities, mental health conditions and to those who are neurodivergent. My job will be to organize events in the south metro area primarily Burnsville and Apple Valley.
Creatively I am Tinygoldfishcos on social media I embrace plus size cosplay and include my glasses in my cosplays instead of thinking of it as a obstacle from keeping my cosplays from being “perfect” or “cannon” this is especially important in a community. I am excited to showcase some new cosplays I’m working on at Twin cities con this year in November.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
From my experiences I would have to say
1) Knowing where to find opportunity:
A lot of my success has come from taking that step and reaching out whether it be cons or businesses to make that connection and making deals that benefit them and me alike.
2)Trying something new/taking risks:
A lot of my more popular cosplays came from trying new methods crafting with foam, 3D printing, fabric crafting, etc, it’s a risk trying new thing cosplaying some turn out some don’t but at least you got the experience from it to do better next time.
3) Being resourceful and working with what you have: Sometimes you have to work with less than what you were expecting whether it’s funding or supplies for an event or not being able to afford cosplays. Sometimes you gotta think out of the box, go to a thrift store, use recycled items
My advice is do what makes you happy, and keep who supports you in that, that’s all that matters but don’t be afraid to do something outside of your comfort zone for passions as well.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes! Anyone interested in collaborating with my cosplay brand, or MNeurodivergent events can contact me at [email protected] and for collaborations with Burnsville anime club events/activities, conventions or other types of collaboration with it can contact us at [email protected]
We love to collaborate with others in the South Metro!
