We were lucky to catch up with Emilee Moore recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emilee, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
One of the main things I find a lot of purpose in is writing songs about my experiences in heartbreak to help people feel less alone in theirs. That’s what music did for me at my lowest and I really hope that my music can be there in those quiet moments when people need to feel understood and validated the most. I remember going through my deepest heartbreak and listening to “Someone Like You” by Adele and thinking “she gets me” and “f she went through this, so can I.” It’s very freeing and comforting to know that there are others out there that have felt what you’ve felt and the thought of being able to do that for anyone that needs it is where I find a lot of purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I write songs about my experiences in life – specifically about the heaviness of my journey with heartbreak and love. Songwriting is very cathartic for me and I fell in love with it the moment I realized that it was a really beautiful way for me to process my emotions and feelings and then listen back to them right away. It’s so exciting to write something you feel good about and then listen to it over and over again. And then to know that those words and sounds can help someone else feel understood or heard. I love being emotional and thoughtful. Those things make me, me. And I really love sharing my music in unique and special ways. I’ve sung from a hot air balloon up thousands of feet in the sky and performed on a billboard on the way to Coachella. And I’ve also shared my songs from the comfort of my couch. The beauty of making art is that you get to choose how you share it and then it gets to live in the world and be experienced by others in whatever way they see fit. I get to share my stories one way, and then everyone who hears them gets to make them their own to fit into their own little world and life experiences. And that is so special to me.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say I’m definitely a go-getter. I love a challenge and I love to learn the little details of how to make something better. So I’m always looking for ways to make my music better, my storytelling better, the way I market my music better and so on. I appreciate that quality about myself. Making art is definitely a skill, but it’s also such a personal journey. I think a lot of the skill of it is actually persistence and resiliency. Choosing to wake up every day and create. Pushing through writer’s block or still showing up to play shows when only a few people are watching. I think wanting to improve and wanting to master my craft day in and day out is a quality I really value in myself. I also try very hard to continuously innovate and adapt. Getting stuck in one place for too long can hinder your success or just general flow of life. My best advice would be to look at those around you who are where you want to be and try what they’re doing and make it your own. And be open to testing out new things/approaches and adapting quickly to what’s working and what’s not. And don’t give up on yourself. Life is long and the best things come with time.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents are incredible. They’ve always supported anything my siblings and I wanted to do. They always found a way. We didn’t grow up with a lot, but we were always loved and supported and that’s truly what mattered most. And I think knowing that allowed me to really take that leap of faith and pursue such a challenging dream. They also always made sure I was always surrounded by music and in some sort of music lesson growing up and I’ll forever be grateful for that.
