Meet Emily

We recently connected with Emily and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

In my professional life, I am the only one in the room. As a Private Wellness Chef my clients expect me to show up and do the work. All of the pressure to create menus, and recipes that I can execute properly all my responsibility.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My path has definitely taken a turn that I never expected. Along with daily chef business that run, I am now the Executive Chef at Aledo Methodist Church. It’s funny how we, as people, believe we are headed one way, and God intercepts with the plans he has for us.
I know get to share my love of clean eating and cooking with people of all ages, and to some who never knew anything like this existed. It is truly a privilege to serve God with the talents He has given me.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1.Listening. If you’re truly listening & aware, you’ll never know what’s being said.

2. Obedient. I bet you didn’t know this article would be taking this direction- being an obedient & faithful servant.

3. Thankful. It is a privilege to do what I love with all of my heart , daily. While , yes, life is frustrating, and we all have pressure, I wake up Thankful daily.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

I get overwhelmed frequently. My plate is definitely overflowing at any given time- as most of us working moms, and wives. In these moments, aside from wanting to blow up ! I take inventory, I take inventory of all of the things I’ve accomplished, my blessings and what is it that I want to accomplish next. My blessings in life are not only about the wins behind the stove, but wins of my family and friends. Seeing the people I love around me get their wins in life is important to me.
I do tend to get bored easily, and frustration tends to come along with that aside from the woes of daily life. Creating goals, and chasing what is next for my career.
