We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Chacon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Hi Emily , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Although I had a roof over my head and ate full meals everyday, I also didn’t grow up with much. Coming from an immigrant family, navigating life in Los Angeles as a first-gen salvadoreña latina was always challenging due to finances. My parents split up when I was in third grade so my mom did everything on her own and always made sure she gave me the best she could. I was very limited on what I could receive so whatever else I wanted, I realized I had to go get it myself. It’s a bittersweet feeling as the way I grew up morphed me into a woman who has always been hyper-independent but it also gave me: drive, ambition, courage and will. I was very grateful for everything my mother was able to provide, my life wasn’t the absolute worst, but I used to feel very frustrated as a kid growing up because I always wanted more than what I had. I always knew there was more out there for me. It’s an interesting feeling when you can feel it in your body that you are destined for more, yet life feels very stagnant. I reached a point where I used that frustrated energy into acting on my own wants and goals to change my life for the better. I know exactly what kind of life I not only want to live, but also deserve. I refuse to stop working on my goals until I get there.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a licensed esthetician specifically located in Sherman Oaks, California at GELA Beauty Bar. I have been in the game for over 5 years now. I absolutely love my job. I specialize in natural lashes and corrective facials. The most exciting part about what I do isn’t performing the service itself, but connecting with others on a deeper level. I can confidently say I have a genuine relationship with every client. I get a lot of first timers and there is just something about laying down with your eyes closed, me asking small questions, and those questions usually transition to a deeper conversation which ends up building such a beautiful relationship. I get genuinely excited to see all of my clients. I like to burn sage/incense in the room to set a warm/inviting vibe. I feel like some salons can have a bad reputation in LA so I try my best to create an experience where yes you are getting a beauty procedure done, but also enjoying a therapeutic visit. I want this to be much more than a lash/facial appointment. I want this to be the best part of their week. As I try my best to master my craft and environment, I am also working towards expanding and leveling up my skills. I am actually back in school for the third time (first time bachelors in marketing, second time esthetician license) to work on my pre reqs for nursing school. The new goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner and dive into the medical esthetician world. I really want to be everyone’s appointed medical esthetician and perform services such as microneedling, PRP vampire facials, botox, filler, and etc. Being back in school has been very humbling but also exciting because I know everything I am working on is only going to elevate my career in this industry.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
3 qualities that have been the most impactful in my journey are: being coachable, fearless, and driven. It’s important to be coachable because how do you expect to become the best if you’re not willing to learn and soak in everything like a sponge? I’ve noticed others don’t like it when being told how to run their business or any suggestions really but I find that extremely silly. I think that stems from a problem within their ego. If anything I say surround yourself with those who have accomplished what you want, try your best to learn from them as much as you can and teach yourself. If you’re not coachable, you won’t be able to learn from others. Don’t be stubborn. Being fearless is key because if I decided every move off of fear, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I was absolutely terrified to leave my corporate 9-5 job and sacrifice a steady salary to become my own boss. Although it was scary, I did it and I knew I was going to be okay because I know I carry a drive within me that won’t let me fail. You have to trust yourself and know that no matter what happens, even if you hit rock bottom, everything will be okay because you will be able to pick yourself back up. Everything goes hand in hand. I might be scared, but I know I’m coachable and have the drive which allows me to be fearless and trust myself in every decision. Remember you are the creator of your own reality.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
It’s interesting because I wouldn’t pick one specific person. There are many who have been helpful in assisting me to overcome challenges and develop the skills I need. This is exactly why I say you need to be coachable and soak in knowledge like a sponge. You can learn from everything/everyone around you if you look closely enough. I will state my old boss was the main person who would push me by saying, “Everything you do here in the office, why don’t you apply that to your side business to take it to the next level?” He helped me grow and pushed me to where I am today. I started thinking and moving differently after that. It’s individuals like them I find very special and feel it’s important to surround yourself with. I am thankful to say today I have about 4-5 girls in this industry that I know we strive to help each-other in a non competitive way which is important.
