We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Collins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I’ve always been drawn to art and fascinated by tattoos. Creativity was a huge part of my life, but I initially took a different path, earning a law degree and working as a family law paralegal. While I valued the work, I constantly felt like something was missing—I craved a creative outlet.
I started painting and drawing traditional tattoo flash, and one of my designs eventually became a pin badge, which led to launching my brand, Rock and Rose Motel. The moment I saw my art take on a life of its own, I knew I had found what I was meant to do. After five years of running my business and creating American traditional-style artwork, pursuing a tattoo apprenticeship felt like the natural next step.
I’ve always trusted my gut, and following that instinct has led me to where I am today, doing what I love and knowing I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m the owner and creator of Rock and Rose Motel and a tattoo artist specializing in bold, bright, American traditional-style work. My art and brand are deeply inspired by vintage Western culture—think cowgirls, rodeo cowboys, and classic Americana, all with a unique twist that reflects my roots in the Northeast of England.
Tattooing has been an incredible journey, and I’m focused on continuing to push my craft, creating strong, striking tattoos that stand the test of time. I love bringing Western-inspired imagery to life in a way that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
Beyond tattooing, Rock and Rose Motel has been growing in exciting ways. One of the cornerstones of my business is my collection of classic motel keychains, which have become a signature part of my brand. Inspired by retro roadside motels, these keychains blend traditional tattoo-style artwork with a vintage Western aesthetic, making them a fan favorite.
I’m also expanding my homewares collection to include cushions, blankets, and stoneware ceramics—pieces that feel like an extension of my artwork. I can’t wait to launch these because they truly bring my designs into everyday life.
Lately, I’ve been exploring large-scale paintings and scenic pieces, which has been such a rewarding creative challenge. Whether through tattooing, artwork, or my brand, my goal is always to create something bold, beautiful, and timeless.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been passion, tenacity, and confidence.
Passion – My love for art and tattooing drives everything I do. It keeps me inspired and motivated, even during tough times. If you’re just starting out, focus on what excites you and let that passion guide your work.
Tenacity – Success doesn’t happen overnight. There were setbacks and challenges, but persistence kept me going. Keep showing up, stay patient, and trust the process—progress comes with consistency.
Confidence – Believing in yourself is key. It’s natural to have doubts, but confidence grows the more you put yourself out there. Trust your vision, take risks, and don’t be afraid to own your space.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
It’s got to be my mum. She was a nurse for over 35 years, saving lives for a living, so keeping Rock and Rose Motel running smoothly is a walk in the park for her. Since retiring, she’s been working with me, and I’ve learned so much from her—her incredible organization skills, leadership, and unwavering compassion. Most importantly, she’s taught me that kindness isn’t a weakness but a strength, and to follow my dreams and that’s something I carry with me every day.
