Meet Emily Esparza

We recently connected with Emily Esparza and have shared our conversation below.

Emily , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Ever since I was little, I have always struggled to find a talent. I would jump around between different talents. To ballet, off-roading sports, skateboarding, and more. I would always get bored of them quickly and move on to another. When I started taking photos, that all changed. I knew I had found my passion from the start. I remember having my first phone; it was a flip phone, and I would always take pictures of the scenery or flowers. My family would always tell me that I have an “eye” for photography. So I decided to improve my skills and bought my first camera, which was an older camera from 2011. I would spend hours outside trying to figure out how to use the camera. Eventually, I mastered this camera, and I bought a more “professional” camera. My style of photos is very colorful, and I love to use a lot of vibrancy and contrast.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I love to travel, and that is what my Instagram page is about. I travel to Mexico and to local places where I live in San Diego. I try to capture the essence of the beauty in these places and the culture. I created this Instagram page because this is my passion and I want to share my photos with the rest of the world. What excites me about running this page, is meeting other people online and interacting with them, sharing stories, camera skills, and belonging to a community.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perseverance, motivation, and passion. These 3 qualities are what encourage me to continue doing what I love. It can be scary as a beginning artist. My perseverance has brought me a long way to where I am today. My motivation, have you ever heard of writer’s block? Well, I get photographer block. It is not as simple as picking up a camera and just pushing a button. You really have to stage the photo and figure out what it is you are trying to capture. My advice for the audience who are early in their journey is to never give up, and play with your perspective. Try to experiment with different focal points. I mastered landscape photography by trying to capture different angles of an object.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I am feeling overwhelmed, I try to compartmentalize. Whether it be my schoolwork for college or my personal life, my advice is to find something that helps you cope when you’re feeling stressed out. My coping mechanism is going outside or listening to music that puts me in a good mood. I recommend finding out what puts you in a calming state. It is best to walk away from the issue that is overwhelming us for a bit and then, when our mind is clear, come back to it. Our mind can be so wise, but it can also be our worst enemy. That’s where we begin to panic and stress. Everyone goes through stress; it is part of life. But the way we manage our stress is the key to being successful.
