Meet Emily Foster

We were lucky to catch up with Emily Foster recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily , thank you so much for agreeing to open up about a sensitive and personal topic like being fired or laid-off. Unfortunately, there has been a rise in layoffs recently and so your insight and experience with overcoming being let go is relevant to so many in the community.
I was laid off right before I started my business due to the effects of COVID on that business. I overcame it by thinking of it as an opportunity to start something new with the new amount of time I had. While I still job searched for a little while, I focused on getting freelance work and building my work up to eventually leave freelancing and go full-time in my business.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I started off as a designer in marketing and advertising agencies and started my own business almost 3 years ago. It has been a wild but fun journey, and I feel like I’m constantly learning!

I’m a branding and website designer and design bespoke, strategic websites for creative service providers. I love that I really get to know my clients throughout their branding and website design process. One of the best parts is getting to be creative with brands and websites, and experimenting with new styles with each project!

Last December, I launched my library of Showit website templates to support business owners who are newer and need a professional website. The templates provide a strategic, well-designed website for creative businesses to attract and convert clients more successfully.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1) Resourcefulness and persistence – basically continuing to keep going despite difficulties

2) Emotional intelligence and being able to relate to people, and hear their opinions and communicate well.

3) Being open to new opportunities and ways of thinking.

I think that people who are early in their journey should focus on making connections and saying yes to opportunities to experiment and find what feels like a good fit. Focus on expanding your network and making genuine connections.

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal clients are wedding pros, photographers, and other event creatives who are looking to elevate their businesses and be seen by more of their ideal clients.

They are serious about their business, ready to grow, and need help honing in on their brand visuals to reach the right people.
