We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Jacobs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emily , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
It all started in childhood, when I watched my mom tell me she was “fine” but I could tell she wasn’t. She “gave up her life for her kids.” She wore this badge of honor until she lost herself in the process. She then became resentful and tried to hide it. I knew that when I had my own children, that it would be my responsibility to create a life that I loved without blame or resentment. I wanted to show my daughters that dreams don’t end at motherhood (or ever).
As a board certified and doctorate-prepared nurse coach, I started my own private practice in 2021 working with many women across the country in designing their purpose driven life. What I learned the most from this experience is that self-doubt and fear prevent us from believing in ourselves that we are worthy of creating an amazing life.
With over 1000 coaching hours in my first year of entrepreneurship, I saw patterns:
“I have no time left for myself”
“I felt lost”
“I don’t know how to take care of myself”
“I need help creating boundaries”
“I give and give to others yet feel exhausted all of the time”
“I am not happy”
I saw an immediate need to create support, community, connection, and collaboration. I used my nursing and coaching skills to develop Empowered Moms.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hello, I’m Emily Jacobs the Founder of Empowered Moms – a community where we raise the bar for mothers who know they are worthy of more, to overcome fear and guilt, break cycles, and pursue dreams beyond motherhood through community, connection, and collaboration. I am an author, speaker, event host, wife, mother of two vibrant daughters, doctorate-prepared nurse and corporate healthcare nursing leader turned Empowerment Coach. My mission is to Up-Level Motherhood, Leadership, and Life.
I am also a working mom who has experienced self-doubt, mom guilt, work place toxicity, anxiety, and a very challenging mother-daughter relationship.
In my debut book, Live Your Life For You (Not Your Mom), I share stories of my challenging mother daughter relationship and how I had to unlearn a people-pleasing perfectionist mindset in order to create a life worth living, despite what my mother thought.
With over 20 years of experience as a nurse and educator, I saw the healthcare system turning more and more toxic, allowing bullying, diminishing accountability, and not hearing or valuing their employees. It was time for a BOLD change.
So, I CLOSED THAT CHAPTER! It was scary, messy, and I would do it all over again. I believed that it would be possible for me to create a life I love and I am here to help other moms get there, too!
Empowered Moms just hosted their first Live Event – holding space for 100 mothers and featuring 10 motivational speakers, 20 mom-owned business vendors, sponsors, lunch, gifts, and community. It was a day full of inspiration, rejuvenation, networking, collaborating, and learning tools to create a life you truly love because dreams don’t have to end at motherhood. Empowered Moms has a membership tribe of networking and continued support. In addition, the More Than Mom 12-week mentorship program is a sisterhood where moms can find their spark and love being a mom without loosing themselves again.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three lessons that were the most impactful in my journey were: 1. learning how to create healthy boundaries 2. transitioning the meaning of self-care to more essentially “taking care of yourself” and last, 3. starting messy and imperfect is better than being paralyzed and stuck. The best advice I have is trial/error, accept feedback/mentorship, and to not be attached to the outcomes. Also, the answer is always no if you don’t ever ask it. I also teach women how to ask and receive help, as this is often very difficult to perform due to feelings of inadequacy.
