Meet Emily Jenks

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Jenks. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Emily with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I think my work ethic comes from growing up in Japan, we were taught to work hard and always be kind to others. I have always put those principals into my photography business. I work really hard for my clients, and I do everything possible to make them happy!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My company and I offer the best photography services for every stage of life! We focus on maternity, newborn, family, engagement, and wedding photography (see how the cycle continues? :)) We love them all! We offer these services all over Northern California. We understand light, capturing emotions, and overall providing the best and easiest experience from planning to receiving your photos to keep forever. We know these moments are huge milestones, and we confidently capture them for you.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Persistence Customer-first mentality
Getting help

Persistence is probably the number one thing! There are so many moments in my business where I doubted what I was doing, and almost didn’t do it. But I kept at it, and it’s the smaller steps that really make big things happen! It’s as little as getting that domain name, and then signing up for a free website to see if it works, and without those little steps, you won’t get the big rewards.

Customer-first mentality – have I had moments where I wanted to fight my clients on the fact that I was right? Yes, absolutely. Do I ever? No. Sometimes your pride needs to take a backseat to your clients wants and needs for all of us to move on and be happy.

Getting help usually means letting go of control. And that’s so hard for a lot of people! But more I was able to outsource, more I was able to grow my business and serve more people! It’s amazing having a team, and I can’t do it all without them.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I take a nap. It’s amazing. When your body and mind tells you you need rest, even if it’s 9am, go lay down! (I guess one perk of owning your own business, I get to do this when I need to!)
