We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
I believe my ability to communicate effectively comes from a few different things. First, my ability to understand the subject at hand and simplify it into understandable parts. Also, deep curiosity of the subject or person and be able to communicate it in a way the person or people in front of me can understand. I stay present in the moment and read whether someone is picking up what I’m communicating or not and adjust my approach or saying it in a different way if needed. Checking in with the person or people too to make sure they understand by asking them and nonverbal cues. Furthermore, I believe practice and trust is key as well. Practicing helped me get comfortable speaking and being vulnerable. And trust in myself that I know what I’m speaking about and what needs to come through me to say will. If I’m communicating to a group I throw away the notes and trust I know all the things I’m supposed to say so that I’m not stuck on a script or bullet points. This way I can stay present and adjust to also what the people in front of me needs.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m passionate about somatic and energy healing because I believe getting in touch with our feelings and emotions through our body is the most potent way to become secure and confident in yourself. I believe that if people were living from their knowing and intuition instead of their heads they can live in the present moment connected to their intention for living and heart. When we are living from our intention and purpose with our hearts open we are fully alive and living in the present moment. And who doesn’t want to feel alive? And being able to feel alive we need to FEEL! So, be in continual connection to how we are feeling gifts us this. Many people, which I experienced growing up and caused me much trauma and sadness, are living from their pain, fears, worries, and stress which takes us from being in the present moment and disconnected from our love and hearts. We will always have stress in life but if we are choosing to focus on them we live in fight or flight mode in our nervous system and body which robs us from experiencing peace, love, and being here now to enjoy the moment.
Currently, I’m focused on teaching workshops, somatic and womens circles, and working with clients 1:1 to help them to heal and get in their bodies to feel confident and secure in themselves connected to their inner compass. I offer classes bi-weekly online for introduction to somatic healing. Find more at my website: www.awakened-mother.com
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most impactful knowledge and qualities on my journey have been a deep sense of curiosity, intention, and connection to the divine. My curiosity has helped me to always be in a mindset of growth and learning which I believe is imperative if we want to truly get to where we want to go or reach our highest potential. Staying connected and living from my heart-centered intention has helped me to not give up when things get hard and perservere. When we are connected to our “why” or intention it helps keep us motivated and on track. When we get lost, we can connect back to it. And lastly, I believe it is important to have your own spirituality. Nurturing my connection to the universe, divine, God has helped me to have deep trust, faith, and find meaning in everything that happens in my life. If we feel connected to something bigger than us and understand the divine is working through us in all we do I believe it helps us do the work we want to do in the world as well.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I am feeling overwhelmed I know it is my nervous system telling me something feels like too much or out of alignment. When this happens I take the time to take some quiet time to myself and tune into what’s going on and if the situation is out of alignment with my values or intention. Many times overwhelm is an indication that something is out of alignment or something is too much, we are at capacity. We can then find a way to reduce overwhelm by taking some things off our plate or speaking up for what we need or help. Overwhelm can also come from fears coming up or having had trauma. When we have had trauma we have a smaller capacity for stress because we haven’t processed the feelings around the trauma. Working through feelings and increasing the capacity to feel also helps overwhelm. I do this with clients in my somatic work.
