Meet Emily Kinney

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Kinney a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Emily, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I’m twenty-five years old and in my seventh year of college. I’ve struggled a lot in school throughout my life, despite loving education, because of my ADHD. I think my ADHD is part of why I’m still determined to achieve my goals as well, and I love where I am in life now, even with the amount of time it’s taken. I know what I want in life and I’m not afraid of failing to get there.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a visual artist, and I’m planning on creating and owning a production company/studio to support artists in many mediums. I currently do various freelance positions, trying to build up my portfolio.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I believe being passionate, adaptable, and curious are the three qualities that have impacted me most in my journey. My goals and desires in life have changed as I’ve grown up, but they’ve always been centered around creativity, and I’ve always had a burning desire to express myself, even if I have to change how I do so. I think it’s important for people to fail (whatever the idea of failure is to you) early in their journey and to become comfortable with those moments of stillness. I believe having setbacks will only allow you to become even more determined to achieve your goals or allow you to reevaluate and readjust.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was raise me with confidence. They taught my brother and me that the world is full of opportunities and that we’re capable of anything if we just try.
