Meet Emily Law

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Law. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.

Emily, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

As someone who wasn’t diagnosed with ADHD, Autism and Anxiety until my thirties, I spent my entire life thinking myself incapable and not disciplined enough. Ironically, I thought working independently would be best for myself long before diagnosis. It turns out that when I’m left in control of how the brand is portrayed and how business runs, I am able to balance my mental health and work. Diagnosis simply helped to confirm why this was a step in the right direction for me. I needed to be able to slow down my work load as I approach burnout; I needed the flexibility to mold my marketing and communication programs to ones that worked with my brain; I needed the ability to shape the processes and procedures to ones I found to be most efficient for the business. Tailoring my work environment to fit my mental health needs improved my success rate exponentially.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I provide mobile hair and makeup services within the city of Las Vegas, with a focus on the bridal industry. My brand focuses on providing high quality beauty services by an experienced professional, while maintaining a price point attainable by the average client. My focus is on quality over quantity, integrity and transparent and fair pricing.
I feel like the makeup industry has been dominated recently by over consumption and a focus on selling excessive products to the masses. My favorite part of what I do is showing each client that not only do they already have a beautiful face and hair, but also they don’t need to pile on products to highlight their best features. Seeing my clients light up when I reveal their look is so rewarding. There’s a moment where they realize that they have always been beautiful; that moment revives my passion daily. It doesn’t end there: I am in a unique area of my industry where most every client I meet is entrusting me with a very important part of a monumental time in their life. That trust and the feeling that I earned it and exceeded it, motivates me.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I would say work ethic, management experience and artistic ability. Growing up, my parents instilled in me the notion that bringing in an income was a privilege not to be taken lightly. I have worked since I was 12, and eventually worked my way up to management positions. Not only was I raised with a strong work ethic, but that ethic helped me to learn various management styles and the inner workings of different customer-facing businesses. In any business that deals with the public, it’s crucial that leadership has personal experience in how to manage, problem solve and maintain client satisfaction. My artistic ability, while the main focus of a business like mine, is not enough to maintain professional relationships and a reliable business.
On my artistry, I am CONSTANTLY learning. I have never felt like a master of my craft. There is always something I can improve on and learn from others. I spend a considerable amount of my free time watching training videos and attending classes with other professionals in my field, in addition to asking my colleagues questions when I have the opportunity to work alongside them.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

My mentor, Yana. I had no idea over a decade ago, that joining her to “do weddings” would shape the trajectory of my life. It sounded like a fun way to earn extra cash doing updos on the weekends. She eventually would train me in makeup and show me how to put together a quality kit for mobile gigs. She held cleanliness and professionalism in high regard, and worked alongside me as I perfected my skills and improved service timings. By the time I branched out on my own, she’d helped build my confidence in providing these services within this space. I still maintain a lot of her standards.
