Meet Emily Mathews

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Mathews. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.

Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

For as long as I can remember, my dad and mom have always encouraged us to do our best and to work hard. Both of them emulated this through their words but more importantly through their own actions. My dad always showed up to work early and did the best he could no matter the circumstances. My mom raised my 7 siblings and I at home. She worked hard to take care of the home, cook healthy, home-cooked meals, and took care of us when we were sick. Both of my parents pointed to Jesus Christ as their reason to strive to love us with everything as He (Jesus) loves us and showed us that is where we get our strength and patience to work hard and honestly.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I own a party in a box company. We are a one stop party shop for all the busy mamas out there. We have designed pre-made theme party boxes and create custom party boxes based off of a theme our customer picks.

We supply everything a host would need to throw a party, from the tableware to personalized decorations and invitations. I love getting to create an awesome party based off of whatever theme the customer chooses and making it unique to them. It makes any theme feel fresh and open with possibilities because every person has different needs.

In the last couple of years, we recently started hosting local themed events for the public.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

When I was in my early teens, an entrepreneurship program was available for me. This started shaping my love of owning my own business and gave me some foundational knowledge and skills for opening a business. I think this class is what really gave me the confidence in my adults years to start a business.

Another big help for me was my local Small Business Association. This is a state funded organization that gave me countless hours of FREE advice and help in getting my business off the ground and helped with growth along the way.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

Learning how to pivot and that it is okay to pivot has been my biggest improvement in the last 12 months. Things don’t always go as plan and we learn a lot about our consumers wants/needs once we are in it. It’s okay to listen to that and pivot from what you initially thought your main focus was going to be.
