Meet Emily Mayne

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Mayne. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Emily, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

“Fake it ’til you make it” is a mentality I certainly honed into when first starting my business as a custom invitation designer. I just continued to put myself out there, share my work, and said yes to as many opportunities as I could, until I was able to build up my portfolio and client base. Once I was able to financially support my family in the way that we needed and maintain consistent work each year, I was finally able to reflect and see that there was no longer any reason to doubt my talents and skills. I am still so grateful and honored to create custom wedding invitations for each new client that I have the opportunity to work with, but I know there is no reason to doubt my abilities to be successful.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I own a full service design and print studio that creates custom, hand-painted wedding invitation designs and paper goods for brides all across the United States and abroad. Our work is defined by the balance of impeccably detailed, painterly designs that are grounded by traditional script and brought to life through luxury printing. What we feel is so special about Emily Mayne Studio is the custom design process that incorporates painted renderings to reflect each bride and grooms wedding day that then becomes a tangible heirloom that will both delight their recipients as the first impression of their wedding day and be treasured by our clients for years to come.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I have been established for eight years now, and what I have found to be the most impactful qualities or areas of knowledge working in the wedding and stationery industry are the following: 1. Value of community over competition 2. Creating a personal and friendly relationship with our clients, rather than just being a means to an end and 3. Staying true to yourself and not following along with every trend that comes and goes.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

The ever-changing obstacles of social media has become a bit of a mountain to climb. Being a small business owner, most of my focus is on pouring my time and creativity into our designs and projects. Lately, making sure that our brand’s presence on social media is current and that the content we create for different social platforms is engaging and optimal for growth has become just as much of a time-consuming focus as my actual business.

To overcome this challenge, we learn, pivot, get creative, try out best to be consistent, all while staying true to ourselves!
