We recently connected with Emily Miller and have shared our conversation below.

Emily, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

I find myself in many rooms as the only female and while it can be challenging to navigate, I’ve found that it is possible to be successful and effective in those places. I’ve been in situations where it felt like I didn’t get a certain job because I was a woman.

Here are 3 things that I bring to each of those conversations:
1. Confidence: I approach it with confidence, not from the stance of I’m a woman and I must prove my worth, but as a person who’s been in business for 8+ years and has something to offer. I see this as meeting another person with open hands, being willing to be myself within a professional sphere and being confident in who I am.
2. Objective: I don’t take things personally (this can be a hard one). Often people say and do things that are hurtful, not thoughtful, etc. Instead of seeing it through the lens of “They said or did that because I’m a woman,” I see it as something they may have done to anyone else. Just because I’m a minority in the industry doesn’t mean they are against me. Whatever is happening is likely not about me anyways but about what the other person is going through or what their culture has taught them.
3. Active Listening: Listening for what people are saying outside of what is coming out of their mouths is key. All humans, whether male or female, appreciate being listened to and long to be understood. They often say things in their tone and body language.
4. Self-awareness: Understanding how I am coming across in a room. Am I being forceful? I will probably receive forcefulness in return. Am I feeling somewhat insecure about being the only woman in the room? If so, am I projecting and feeling hyper-aware of every nuance and then taking it personally?

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

As the founder and owner of a marketing agency much of my work includes visionary work, managing my team, sales, building processes, and networking. I believe that if someone is in the right seat in the business they are fulfilled and love work. That’s where I am.

I’m an inventor by nature and so building processes and being the visionary of the company brings so much life and joy.

In the 8 years we’ve been in business we’ve grown from offer graphic design, printing and photography to adding social media management, web design, SEO, Google Ads, Email Marketing, and more.

This spring we rebranded from Inspire Design Co to Creative Quo. It’s been a wonderful experience to lean into and craft a brand for ourselves that embodies who we really are.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Adaptability has been a quality that has been so beneficial. There have been numerous times where things didn’t go to plan and we had to adapt in order to reach our end goal.

Surrounding myself we people who off-set my weaknesses has made a positive impact on the business. It is because of my team that we are able to deliver excellent, quality customer care and results for our clients. They bring the organization to my chaos, the groundedness to my vision.

The importance of hiring a great business coach is something I can’t stress enough! I’ve worked with a number of coaches and have seen the impact they can have on the business because of their influence. I had a coach who was very visionary, more so than myself, it was the person I needed to work with at the time in order to gain confidence to dream big and go for it. But when it came building systems and organization within the business to keep it alive it wasn’t a great fit anymore. So I hired a coach who is great at those things and because of her we have strong internal systems that can withstand an influx of work and new clients.

Surround yourself with people who balance you, whether that’s in a team capacity or coaching and you will go much further than you could on your own.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

We love and find that we are most suited to work with the Creative, Visionary, Inspired, Ambitious, Problem-Solving business owner. Someone who values marketing and understands that done right it will work. This person has a lot to juggle and just wants someone, who is trustworthy, communicates well, and brings results, to take this big, important piece off their plate.

Our process is very collaborative. We guide our clients through the process of getting their marketing up and running and then they can be as much or as little involved (within reason) as they like. We can, and do, manage all the moving pieces of the marketing without a lot of input because we understand that as a business owner, you didn’t start your business to do marketing.
