We recently connected with Emily Nemeth and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I look back on the 10+ years of my career and I can see a dramatic difference in my confidence and self-esteem from who I was then to who I am now. Like most things, it just takes time and experience. As a teen I was naturally always confident and independent however, as I explored different avenues of my career, there were several jobs that impacted my self esteem; both in negative and positive ways. Over the last decade, I have had bosses that yelled at me. Bosses that made me cry and feel stupid. One position that really broke me for a while. But then, I found the best boss. This was the job that really changed me. My boss became a mentor. I had relationships with CEO’s that taught me the value in people and “kindness is something you can give for free”. I was in an environment that was patient and embodied strong leadership. I was shown organizational health and that impacted my confidence greatly. Everyone is different. My confidence was built from the good and the bad experiences and environments that I worked in. The bad environments gave me grit and the good environments showed me humility and laid a foundation I knew I wanted my leadership to stem from and that is where my confidence grew.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
About me? Well, I’ll start this off with a warm introduction as I am originally from Texas (so obviously tacos & margs are my main food group). A good playlist and a good dive bar are my top two love languages. I’m a runner, I do pilates (sometimes) and I have to be by some large body of water daily. I like photography (so much so that I self-published a coffee table book of my photos, “Bathroom Saga”). I pride myself on being an excellent communicator, visionary, leader and finally, for the last few years I have had a positive impact on organizations by managing client relations and expanding businesses through project management, global event coordination and on the horizon … I am the owner of a photography studio and event space.
Currently I work for a marketing agency based on the east coast who specializes in behavioral change marketing. This has been an extremely challenging yet fulfilling role as it has expanded my knowledge of the industry and given me the opportunity to grow into a deeper understanding of digital and traditional media as well as a specific clientele.
Aside from my marketing career, the last two years I have spent building a photography studio and event space in New York City (Here Studio NYC). This project has been the closest to me as its resonated the most with what I really value to do in life. Providing space for photography and people.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
If I could narrow down the top three things that impacted me most throughout the years they would be.
- Finding a really good mentor(s). Mentors change with seasons/jobs but recognizing these key people and their value while in proximity to them can accelerate your career immensely.
- Network. Network. Network. You don’t have to be friends with everyone but you should be friendly to everyone. I text a friend I worked with 11 years ago last week about NYFW … we had been out of touch for a couple years but you never know when it comes back, and everything always comes back, full circle.
- Be the first to take the blame and always be willing to learn. No one wants to work with someone who can never own some of the blame. Don’t be that guy.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am definitely excited about the people I still have yet to meet and fall in love with and work alongside. I have a few ideas in the queue and I am excited about the opportunity to partner with brands and industries that have like-minded values. If you are in or around NYC, don’t hesitate to reach out.
