Hi Emily, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Overcoming imposter syndrome started with flipping the script on how I thought about imposter syndrome. While I could argue it’s still a struggle, I am no where near where I used to be. With the ever growing social media platforms I would find myself stuck in the cycle of viewing everyone in my industry and idolizing how much better they were. It wasn’t until I read the words of Jon Acuff that changed my thoughts on it. He wrote about how Imposter Syndrome is a superpower. It allows you to be introspective, challenge yourself, and grow in your business. And lastly, throw out the words “little” and “just” from your vocabulary. You have a business. You are a _____ (photographer, writer, graphic designer).

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I photograph wedding and lifestyle sessions in Upstate New York. My passion lies in photographing moments that are genuine and natural. The moments caught in time that truly represent my couples. As cliché as it sounds, I love people and telling their story through photography is genuinely one of the biggest blessings in my life. Maybe it’s the way God made me or that my grandma Irene worked tirelessly to make sure every single person she came in contact with felt known and loved. I have a passion for making people feel beautiful. In a world telling us that we are not enough, I want to remind you that the way you are made is perfect. Your story is worth capturing. I do through that curating an experience from start to finish that celebrates the beauty of my clients and their story.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three lessons:
1. Get comfortable with the uncomfortable.
2. Your client is the hero, not you.
3. Find joy in the journey,

Running a business will push you so far outside your comfort zone, so getting comfortable with the uncomfortable is about developing a muscle of being confident to try and fail. It’s a muscle that starts with small decisions and it builds over time.

Donald Miller’s storybrand changed my life. Learning how to properly tell stories and make my client the hero changed the way I do business.

Fall in love with the process because it keeps you in the game longterm.

If you’re an entrepreneur, this book should be at the very top of your must read list. Through storytelling, the author shares his business journey while offering incredible nuggets of wisdom that can (and should) be applied to every type of business. His gifted leadership approach has you asking how can I apply this for my employees, contractors, clients, etc. Businesses that start with unreasonable hospitality approach will win in the long run.
