We were lucky to catch up with Emily Olson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter Syndrome is REAL, y’all. But here’s the thing. It’s easy to compare and feel as though you may not be as qualified as someone else, particularly when you are first starting out, if you are surrounding yourself with other professionals in your same field. And you SHOULD be surrounding yourself with them. The most quality connections you can have in business partially stem from people who came before you, succeeded, and are ready and willing to share their experiences and advice with newcomers. Looking around in a group like that, however, can feel intimidating! Especially if you are entering a new realm of your business. What I have found in this process, though, is that first and foremost, it is not a competition. There are clients out there for everyone and the right clients will make it to you if you have systems in place to foster that connection. Secondly, when we get on platforms like social media and see 100 other people in our field posting similar ideas or practices, its very easy to think, ‘I don’t have anything new to offer – they just posted that, so I need to come up with something completely new and different.’ The reality, however, is that our ideal audience does not typically have the same knowledge level in our chosen field (hence why they hire us!). They would love to hear about your suggestions for something, or how you would go about something else. My biggest suggestion in overcoming imposter syndrome is to never assume your audience has specific knowledge on a topic and use your connection with others in your field as an opportunity for collaboration vs. competition. You chose what you do because you have a talent for it, are passionate, and can make it a success if you choose!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My business, Luxe Organizing Solutions, is a luxury home organization firm dedicated to bespoke systems, custom curated solutions, and enhancement of the desired aesthetics of a client’s home. One of the aspects of our service that I feel sets us apart is that we are not coming in, organizing your items, and leaving you with no idea how to maintain the system. It is our goal, day in and day out, to create lasting systems that will grow and evolve with life and family changes, allowing our clients to enjoy their space and to focus on the aspects of their lives that they enjoy most.
Going into the holiday season, we love to be involved in our clients decorating their homes, helping to take down and properly store seasonal decorations, in an effort to ease the process and stress that can sometimes accompany the holiday and the visits from family and friends. This is a truly magical time of year and we want our clients to be able to focus on the time they have with loved ones – and leave the stress and mess to us!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Open mindedness is key in starting a business, as you have to be open to learning new skills (e.g. marketing, accounting, etc.) to help your business prosper. The ability to adapt is also huge in business, particularly as you grow. There are inevitable hurdles and obstacles that have to be overcome in growing a business and being able to navigate these with a positive attitude is going to help tremendously. The third thing that I think is important is enjoying the journey. It is not going to be easy every day and some days will feel hard to overcome, but there is so much joy in seeing that you put your mind to something and succeeded despite all of that. If you are always looking forward and never stopping to appreciate how far you have come you will miss out on all the little wins along the way.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Extreme Ownership, by Jocko Willink, is a fantastic read for any business owner, especially if you have or plan to have people working with/for you. It impresses upon you the idea that leaders must accept responsibility for what happens in their situations, as is greatly important in business and as a boss. It also teaches that discipline is freedom, an idea that I think a lot of entrepreneurs can resonate with. I started my business with the goal of more freedom and time with my family and being disciplined to create a business that is successful is what is going to help me achieve that goal.
