We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Soller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Emily , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I have been creative my entire life; it’s just always been a part of my story. It is the spark that keeps me feeling alive in a lot of ways. I find that I tap into my creativity later in the day, sometimes even late into the evening. It is typically after I have tended to my family and completed certain day-to-day tasks. I can then take my mind on a different path, so to speak, a creative one. I have always been cognizant of the fact that if I want to keep my creativity thriving, I must be the one to nurture and prioritize it. Family is #1, but my creative life is very important to me as well. Many creatives will tell you that this path is typically not an easy or straightforward one, it can be very challenging at times but is always incredibly rewarding in the end. Creativity has and always will be a part of who I am, and I am grateful for it!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I started my company Daisy Jane Designs about 4 years ago with the vision of creating botanical art from preserved greenery and florals. I have always had a passion for interior design and creating spaces in the home that tell a story. Nature has been a huge source of inspiration for me as well. Most of my ideas flow from simply observing the natural world around me. My eye for natural elements and the ability to incorporate them into the home has given what I create an aesthetic all its own. When you add the fact that almost all the creations that I design are real and preserved, you have another unique spin that makes it so special. These pieces have been carefully preserved to give the look of being alive with absolutely no maintenance required. They are just simply meant to be admired and enjoyed in the home for many years. To me, this is pure magic!
Daisy Jane Designs ‘For a Cause’ is a more recent path I have created within my company. The purpose of it is to assist with the fundraising efforts for charitable organizations all over the world. I knew when I started Daisy Jane Designs that I wanted to bring an element of giving back into the fold of my business. My mantra is “if we see a need in the world around us; we fill it if we can.” I started this endeavor less than a year ago and it has since taken off. I have worked with 5 charitable organizations thus far and have several more in the books for the new year. I love the idea of building community with other folks who share a similar passion.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I will first start by keeping it real. Anyone who has created a business from scratch will tell you it can be intimidating and overwhelming at times, it’s not always for the faint of heart. Pushing past those mental obstacles is crucial, not only in the beginning of the journey but really throughout its entirety. It’s a particular mindset that one must possess. That said, the three qualities that have impacted my personal journey the most are persistence, curiosity and confidence. I would not be where I am today without all three of those. Persistence is key when you are starting out. If you want to be successful, you must put one foot in front of the other even on the days where you find yourself feeling in over your head. I 100% believe that having a persistent and forward-thinking mindset is how you grow an idea into something that can thrive in the real world. I love this quote by Albert Einstein, “Curiosity is its own reason.” To be creative, you must be curious. Curiosity is the spark that starts the artistic process. When I allow my mind to wander a bit and think outside of the box, I can then open new doors with my creativity. Confidence is not something I possess that easily all of the time. There were times, especially in the beginning stages, where I would say the term ‘fake it till I make it’. I have always had the ability to exude confidence even when I wasn’t fully feeling it on the inside. With time and experience, my confidence has also grown. I have learned from my mistakes when things don’t always work out the way I had planned; these moments are inevitable and can provide a lot of wisdom for the future. Reflecting on the hardships and lessons is sure to build confidence because you’ve seen both sides of failure and success and know that you have the power to keep moving forward in either situation.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I am thrilled to say that my business has grown quite well in the past 12 months and is continuing to gain momentum. I think I possess a strong ability to connect with others and what I create has really resonated overall with people. Growing the philanthropic piece of my business has been incredibly rewarding as well. It has created growth from a completely new perspective. As a result, I network with organizations outside of the design world that provide me with new areas of growth. The truth is it has been an incredible 12 months for my business!
