Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Turinas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Emily, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
From a young age, I always felt a deep desire to help others and cherished the opportunity to build long-lasting, meaningful connections. My own journey through therapy was transformative; I fell in love with its ability to empower individuals to shape their own lives. What captivated me even more was its profound intergenerational impact on future generations, sparking a passion that led me to pursue a PhD in counseling psychology.
Just two days before my graduation, I welcomed my daughter into the world. In that instant, everything changed. I found myself overwhelmed, exhausted, and in the midst of an identity crisis as I tried to reconcile my new role as a mother with the person I had always known myself to be. Emerging from the haze of postpartum, I felt passionately about redirecting my work to support women through pregnancy and motherhood.
This stage of life is like no other. It is filled with the highest of highs, moments of pure joy and love, but also some of the lowest lows, with overwhelming challenges and changes. I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to work with women during this transformative period. Witnessing their strength, resilience, and emotional journey, as they navigate and sometimes grieve the changes at every stage, is both humbling and inspiring. It is an honor to help them discover their own strength and to be a part of their journey towards finding balance and peace in this unique phase of life.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Specializing in perinatal mental health, I offer therapy for moms (and dads) through all stages of motherhood from fertility to early parenting. I opened my practice, Live Oak Psychology, where I serve clients in Austin, Texas and Denver, Colorado. I also enjoy working with clients through all types of life transitions from navigating college to adjusting to adulting. I believe each persons story is unique, and I work to tailor evidence-based approaches to meet individual needs. Together, we’ll use therapy to explore and empower you to make positive changes in your life. I approach psychotherapy with empathy, support, honesty, some humor, and productive challenging to help you make the changes you are looking for.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Empathy. Therapy is for the patient, it does not matter how my personal beliefs aline, I always work to understand where they are coming from and what is going to be best for them as an individual. Learning to put yourself in their shoes is vital!
2. Try everything & find your niche. When becoming a psychologist there are so many areas you can specialize in. I think it is critical to have an open mind and get training in multiple areas so that you know what you like and don’t like. The best advice I have received is that the more you create a niche you enjoy to work with the more you will build a practice you enjoy. It is ok to tell people you are not a good fit!
3. Persistence. I knew I wanted to build a private practice to have the flexibility and work life balance that worked for my family. Building a practice from the ground up took so much more work and time than expected.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
An ideal client for me is someone who is curious about themself, their relationships, and the life they are building. I love working with people who are open to challenging their thoughts and truly want to understand themselves at a deeper level. Typically my work revolves around helping people better understanding how past experiences impact their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. As well I work with people who feels stuck or unsure how to move forward identify and break patterns that are not helpful in their life. Given that I provide therapy through all life transitions, from the demands of motherhood to navigating life after college, an ideal client is driven to live a fulfilling and authentic life.
