We were lucky to catch up with Emily Ulrich recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I think my optimism comes from the dog community. It’s such a strong bond and structure. Everyone who works or volunteers in the animal welfare field has such a passion in what they do. It brings me joy to see animals find a forever home!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
When I was in college, I started a dog blog called @houstondoggopics. I would volunteer at our local animal shelter on the weekends and post dogs that were in need of a home. My hope was that every dog that lived in the shelter would find their forever home through my social media page. Over time, I have continued to use my Instagram as a source for this, but now I primarily post my own rescue pups. My husband and I have rescued four beautiful dogs from local animal shelters around Houston. I love sharing their smiles, and posting about animals in need.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When finding rescue dogs, a forever home, I think it doesn’t take as much of a skill set, but instead a team. The animal welfare group in Houston is a group of some of the most amazing people. They all want the same thing and that is to help those who cannot help themselves. I think spreading the word will make the most impact. There are so many animals who are in need in local shelters in foster organizations, adopting and fostering saves lives.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love collaborating with local businesses. This gives me the opportunity to share a product and its story, and give back. At the end of the month, I usually make a huge gift basket of products received over the month and donated to a local animal shelter. This helps an animal need and promotes local businesses in the area.
