Meet Emilymai Dunbar

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emilymai Dunbar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Emilymai , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I discovered my purpose through my life’s pain. A quote I once read changed the trajectory of my life: ” Channel your pain into your purpose.” I didn’t even know the definition of the word purpose at the time, but I knew I wanted the pain to go away or at least subside; to do that, I needed a way to mitigate what was happening to me internally and externally. Therefore, in my search to understand the word purpose, I started reading books about purpose discovery; I read scriptures from the Bible about how great men overcame and lived out God’s will(I am a Christian). I started listening to sermons and asking questions; I became deliberately interested in my quest for purpose discovery. While inquiring, I realized there was ONE person I forgot to talk to about my world, Jesus. He has always been more than a figure as a Christian I look to emulate; he has been a friend and guiding light in my life; neglecting to communicate with Him only made my initial quest of understanding purpose; therefore, I consulted with Him on what I was born to do, I only heard ONE THING FROM HIM “use what is in you, around you to expand my kingdom.” that was it for me! The real question was, “Lord, what is in me? I knew what was around me then, but I lacked an understanding of the Innate deposit I could use to expand His kingdom. One day, while praying, I heard a faint voice that said, “Your pain is your purpose.” that was when I started digging deeper into my pain, which was extremely difficult for me, but I needed to find out my purpose. I looked around and saw that people were in need, and my inability to help made me distressed; women who have been molested or raped brought me great pain, as I could relate. Children being abused brought me great pain, and irresponsible parenting was something I detested, so it became a pain of mine. I realized what was in me and around was something I could use to elevate the hurt in this world, one soul at a time. That’s how I went on a mission to change and heal
me first in order to change and heal others around me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am fortunate to run an organization that focuses on bringing healing to the BIPOC community through coaching, counseling, and various other avenues for individuals, couples, and families to thrive in every aspect of their lives. It brings me joy when I see people healthy; I believe health is wealth. There is so much in store for this organization, we have a show coming up to discuss real people with real problems. We have couples and family retreats in the works, we have alot of networking opportunities to grow, its just this season of my life right now God is healing me so things have been slow but soon everything will fall in place.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Being self-disciplined, emotionally intelligent, compassionate, and having integrity has significance. I always tell people to do what they love and discipline themselves to be good at what they love. Acquiring an education is an advantage for you, not so much for those around you; no one wants to listen to an unevolving person for long. Having compassion is the most incredible tool you will need to impact your world. Use it; you have it in you. I know that many people in the world are not kind and might not have been kind to you, but don’t you allow others and their lack of self-understanding to limit you? Challenge yourself to be better and brighter daily. Know you and the people around you that’s where emotional intelligence come into play.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

A lot has happened this year, right after the launch of Mending Hearts Life Coaching, but I thank God for the strength to persist. I have learned to allow people to be who they are. As I prepare for marriage, a lot of wounds have opened up, from family and friends to humanity. Many unfathomable wounds and heartaches have resurfaced, and I have had a lot of processing and mending of hearts in my life. I am grateful for an arduous journey; it will only improve Mending Hearts and me. My patience have improved thanks to my beloved husband to be, he has been one of my pillars in such a season.
