We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emma Collins King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emma Collins, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
When it comes to owning and running multiple businesses, self-discipline has to be present. It can be hard to find balance between living your best life and making exceptions for certain situations, versus sticking to a routine and not wavering on your standard policies. I like to think of self-discipline as the key to not only a successful work life, but also an overall happy and healthy lifestyle. Self-discipline is such a mental concept you really have to master and learn what expectations are reasonable for you to set for yourself and your part in your business(es). My self-discipline really comes from my motivation to be one of the top makeup artists in Georgia, and eventually the country. At the end of the day, my desire to be successful really drives this home for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Being a professional makeup artist is honestly something that came out of left field for me. I always grew-up a really big tomboy, I played girls basketball for years, and was never into makeup. My junior year of high school, that all changed. I got super into makeup through watching beauty gurus on YouTube and it really opened my eyes to where the beauty industry can take you. My high school counselor was the one who pointed me in the direction of going to cosmetology school while I was still in high school. My senior year of high school, I started cosmetology school and started making connections in the industry. Through my sophomore year of college, I assisted multiple different makeup artists around Atlanta/North Georgia and did a lot of work for free, really just trying to get my name out there and perfect my technique. From there, Glam By Emma Collins King was born and has been my pride and joy ever since. Flash forward to present day and Glam By Emma Collins King is one of the top makeup artists offering makeup services for any and every event you can think of. In this coming year, I have huge plans to expand my brand… I will be launching my own glam team, The Collins Cove Glam Team, where I will be contracting out multiple different makeup artists to take on bookings under my brand. There’s so much goodness coming up this next year and I’m just so thankful for everything coming my way.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that have been super impactful to me are confidence, resilience, and honesty. Confidence is so important in the beauty industry because you market yourself in this industry and you are your business’s biggest advocate, so being confident in your brand and the services you provide speaks volumes to your clientele and sets the tone for your relationships with other professionals in the industry and your clients. Resilience is also super important because you will constantly encounter difficult situations running your own brand and you HAVE to learn to problem-solve quickly, let the difficult situations roll off your back, and move on knowing you handled them to the best of your ability. Honesty is probably the most important of the three qualities because it is always better to be upfront with clients about what you can and cannot realistically make happen for them. If you’re just starting out in the beauty industry, know that these qualities take time to build within your business, and it takes getting knocked down a few times to find these within yourself and your brand.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
Both of these things are of equal importance in my eyes. In business, you really want. focus on what you’re good at because that of course is how you will be the most successful, so for a makeup artist, that could mean a certain style of makeup you do, doing makeup for a specific type of event, etc., but it’s also equally as important to improve areas of weakness in your artistry and business, so that could mean doing a one-on-one lesson with another artist who specializes in a different style of makeup than you do, branching out and collaborating with other creatives on a project unlike one you’ve done before. etc. I try to consistently reflect on what I’m doing with my business that’s working and that’s not working, and by doing so, it helps me grow and make changes where they’re needed.
