Emma Delane, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep a physical notebook and an open note on my phone at all times. Whenever I have an idea for a story, I write it down somewhere so I remember it later. Also, sometimes, during class, I get an idea for a song. I have so many worksheets and homework pages covered in song lyrics! This helps me stay creative.
I’m also blessed to be surrounded by a lot of creative people. I’m constantly inspired by their passion and ideas.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My dad has played a huge role in the performer I’ve become. I tend to hit low points before an audition or a few days before a show. The anxiety kicks in, and I feel unprepared. Something my dad said that stuck with me was “never say no for someone else”. Even if you’re not sure you’re right for a show, even if you’re not sure people will like your script, give it a go anyway. Because you never know how people may respond. He also told me to be the last person to give up on yourself. Even if it seems as though everyone around you is shutting down your ideas, YOU should always be your biggest advocator.
