We were lucky to catch up with Emma Highfill recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emma, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Honestly, I’ve always been the kind of person who tries a little bit of everything. I never really had one clear passion or calling. I liked a lot of things, but nothing ever truly stuck or felt like “this is it.” I’d go down these rabbit holes, trying new paths to see if they fit. I’ve done everything from studying to be a phlebotomist, to working at a trailer manufacturing company, to going to school to become an autopsy technician. I even worked alongside my husband in his media business.
The pattern was always the same…I’d get into something for about a year or so, and then I’d get bored, feel unfulfilled, and move on. It made finding a sense of purpose really difficult. I kept looking for it in the next job, the next project, or following in others paths thinking maybe that would finally be the thing that made me feel grounded or “me.”
When the cookie business started, it honestly felt like a happy accident. But over time, I realized something important…my purpose wasn’t going to come from any job title or how productive I was. Trying to find it by constantly chasing new things left me feeling more lost. What I eventually came to understand is that my purpose comes from God. He gave me certain gifts and strengths, and I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to explore so many different things, even if they didn’t work out long-term.
Looking back, I see now that I wouldn’t have appreciated what I’m doing with my cookie business if it hadn’t come in the right timing. I wasn’t ready before. But now, I get to do something I genuinely love, and even more than that, I get to share something sweet(literally) with other people.
It didn’t come easy. There were a lot of seasons where I felt useless, like I didn’t have anything I was truly passionate about. But I kept going, holding on to hope that it would work out. And honestly, I believe that was God walking with me the whole way.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Right now, my whole life pretty much revolves around the chunky cookies. I don’t do a whole lot else besides coming up with new flavors, baking, and sharing them with others. It’s become a full cookie life for me, and I have no complaints!
This all started as a happy accident at the beginning of 2024. I had taken an online course on chunky cookies at the end of 2023, and for some reason, I got the idea to post a different cookie flavor every day on social media for 365 days. It was just meant to be something fun and consistent to keep me posting. I actually made it to day 270-something before I had to pause, mostly because things picked up so much with my business. But it was such a fun season…it gave me a chance to experiment with a ton of different flavors, and people really enjoyed following that journey, which made it even more fun for me.
About a week into the challenge, someone I went to school with messaged me asking if I could ship cookies, and that was where things shifted. What started as a personal challenge turned into an actual business….only pretty much a week into posting!
Now, I’m shipping cookies nationwide, doing local markets and events, and building something I never imagined. It took a while to figure out how big I wanted to go with it all, but I finally know what I’m working toward: I want to open a cookie drive-through. I just got a trailer that I’m slowly turning into a kind of cookie food truck. I am just taking small steps toward that bigger dream.
The name BlissMixx came from the idea that every cookie is mixed with bliss. I wanted to take something simple, like a chocolate chip cookie, and make it something that brings people joy. I think there’s something really special about that….finding bliss in something simple. That’s what I try to reflect in my business and my life. For a while, I honestly just wanted to give away cookies and be part of fundraisers, letting everyone get a taste of something sweet. But realistically, I’ve had to build a sustainable business around it, and I’m proud of how far it’s come.
I try not to overcomplicate things. I go with the flow, do what feels right, and try to bring happiness to others…one chunky cookie at a time. I’m just grateful for the growth, the momentum, and the chance to do something I love.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three things that have really impacted my journey are resilience, learning to let go, and being able to go with the flow.
Resilience came from going through tough times. I didn’t have the easiest childhood, but I’ve never let that define who I am or what I’m capable of. Sure, there were moments where I questioned my worth—like, who am I to start a cookie business? But I kept coming back to this mindset: if other people can do it, why can’t I? That’s been really powerful for me. It doesn’t matter where you come from or how you grew up—you always have a choice in how you move forward.
Letting go was another huge piece. Letting go of fear, of needing control, and even letting go of my own timeline. I’ve realized my plans often look nothing like what God had in mind, but His have always turned out better. The way this cookie business came together wasn’t because I forced it. It was because I followed where I felt He was leading, even when I didn’t fully understand it.
And going with the flow. It has helped me not freeze up when things get uncertain or when plans change. I’ve said a few times that I feel like I’m just riding a wave I didn’t create. I’ve learned that things don’t always go as expected, but if you keep moving and stay open, amazing things can happen.
If you’re just starting out, my biggest advice would be: Keep taking steps, even when you don’t see the full picture. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. You grow by doing!! You never know where it might lead.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The person who comes to mind right away is my husband, Nicholas. He’s been running his own business for almost seven years now, and I’ve learned so much just by watching him. For a while, I even worked for him, and that really opened my eyes to what being a business owner is actually like. Before we met, I didn’t even know what the word “entrepreneur” meant, and now I am one, and I owe a lot of that to him.
He’s the one who gave me the confidence to start BlissMixx. and who continues to push me to dream bigger. He has this way of seeing potential in me, and in the business that I would’ve never seen on my own. He constantly gives me new ideas and helps me look at things from a different angle. His brain just works so differently! He’s always 10 steps ahead, thinking through every possibility.
Whenever I hit a wall or don’t know what to do, he’s the first person I turn to. And somehow, he always has a solution or a new way of approaching the problem. He’s just really smart when it comes to business, and his support means everything to me. For a long time, I didn’t believe I could do something like this, but he’s always believed in me, and that’s made all the difference.
What makes it even more special is that we get to work on our businesses side by side and grow them together. I’m just really grateful for him. His support, his ideas, and his belief in what BlissMixx could be is incredible. I wouldn’t be where I am without him.
