We recently connected with Emmalee Sullivan and have shared our conversation below.
Emmalee , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Personally, I feel like every photo I take can “tell a different story” in a way but I always enjoy seeing evolution in my editing and being able to have more than one theme in my photos. My photos have a lot of color in them so being able to play with different tones gives me a lot of creative freedom and ability to edit the photos in different ways.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a concert photographer based out of Washington DC and Denver, Colorado! I began this journey by shooting a few local bands in Denver in local venues/bars. Then eventually I began working with magazines and press companies that allowed me to photograph bigger more mainstream artists which allowed me to start my life long dream of working in the music industry! Since moving to Washington, DC I have been inspired to take a lead in my photo career which is how I started my magazine known as Televised Magazine. Televised is a magazine inspired by the song “Televised” by Hunny. The original meaning of the song explains the toxic parts of the internet and the suffocation of media, However, Televised Magazine is the approach to change that image and use the internet in a way to reminisce on good memories and keep it a positive place!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three most important skills I have learned so far on my journey are patience, confidence, and kindness. I am an introverted control freak which is the exact opposite of what the music industry will provide so learning patience and accepting the shows for what they are has been absolutely key in my success in shooting shows. Confidence has also been something I have struggled with however, if you are in a photo pit it is crucial that you are confident with your moves and ability to take photos to get the best results possible. Lastly kindness is so important when it comes to things like working with other photographers, emailing publishers, and overall just supporting others work. The music industry can sometimes be a hard and scary industry so providing kindness and support makes it better for everyone.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Most times, that moment before entering the photo pit is usually the scariest time for me. Some ways that I cope with it is by chatting with the other photographers there to get to know their story and why they were interested in shooting this specific show. Meeting people in the same situation as you is a very comforting feeling and it helps knowing other people in your industry!
