Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emmy Slager. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Emmy, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I think that purpose can be constantly changing and evolving. Sometimes I feel like there is an immense pressure to find our life’s purpose or to weave together a story that makes sense, but life is way messier and much more nuanced than that would allow for. Right now, I feel like I am living in accordance with my purpose while also being open to it shifting over time.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a beach town hairstylist with a love for low maintenance looks inspired by my home on the shores of Lake Michigan. Most of my time behind the chair is spent creating soft and effortless looks for women. I’ve always been a creative at heart, so finding a career that could cater to that was incredibly important to me. I love being a part of my community and helping women feel not only beautiful, but seen, heard and inspired. I used to spend a lot of my time on my social media or blog, but lately I’ve been much more excited about the genuine connections that I have been able to create with my clients in person.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that come to mind just right off of the bat would be resilience, confidence and flexibility. I think it goes without saying that life is not without its challenges, but being able to bounce back quickly is something that I have always taken pride in. Confidence for me, is sort of a byproduct of that, knowing that I can overcome whatever challenges that may come my way. Lastly, flexibility is a newer one for me. Being able to pivot, evolve and change has helped me to feel more on track and more open to opportunities that come my way.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
For me personally, refining and going all in on my strengths has helped to alleviate a lot of feelings on inadequacy. I think that everyone has areas in which they excel or in which they choose to focus. It feels like a lot of pressure to have to be successful in everything. Failure is disappointing, but I think that life is all about trial and error at the end of the day. Of course, investing effort into improvement is important, but recognizing strengths and weaknesses is an essential tool in building confidence in my opinion.
