We were lucky to catch up with Eric Gomez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Eric, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by taking the time to sit back and live life in the moment. These moments are what us artists use to express the deepest senses of our creativity. When we’re in the moment, we catch things that inspire and motivate us. I keep this in mind, especially when I feel a bit less creative because it reminds me to live fully even when the pressure is on me to work hard. Sometimes the work itself can stunt our growth when we forget why we do it in the first place. This self-awareness is necessary for me to bring myself back in tune with my creative side.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Currently, I own a broadcast and streaming business that has a few components to it. It started off as a live stream production that I wanted to do to pass time through my recovery from back surgery. I was a touring artist prior to then and I had to find a way to pivot the music business into something productive post-covid.
In 2021, I started learning the ins and outs of live stream production and broadcasting, and this journey has led to the company we have today, Black Marker Media, LLC. WE specialize in live event video broadcasting, podcast productions and live streaming SaaS software services that allow others to create their own media platform directly on their website. There are 3 main components to our business.
1. BlackMarker.tv – This is our in-house platform where we feature our own original productions, live music videos from independent artists around the world and broadcast live events and PPV shows that we create with our partners.
2. Event & Podcast Production Services – We provide onsite support and production for live events, PPV and podcasts for our clients who are trying to expand their network reach beyond the physical interactions. The world is increasingly becoming more connected through virtual events and interactive productions. Our team is equipped to help others achieve this goal by running the production so they can focus on their event.
3. ChannelCast SaaS Software – At www.blackmarkermedia.com we offer the ability for anyone to turn their website into a media powerhouse. Clients can live stream directly to their site and 3rd party platforms simultaneously; they can provide Video On-Demand content; create and manage PPV events; as well as run 24 hour scheduled programming with our proprietary OTT platform.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I now realize that every small thing I learned in life led me to learn another small thing. From audio production to IT server support, to web design and video editing. As time went on, all those various small things worked together to help me accomplish larger goals later on. I learned to NEVER stop learning and made a conscious decision to run at the goals and dreams that scared me. This probably had the most effective impact on me and my journey today.
For me, the key to developing myself was in facing challenges head on and not allowing myself to have doubt determine my steps. If I felt unsure about a specific piece of the business, I went and learned that piece until I felt confident in it. Each piece I strengthened helped ensure the overall goals were in reach. I can’t stress enough the importance of allowing yourself to EVOLVE as needed, and not allowing fear or apathy to guide your decisions and training.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think one of the main things that saved me throughout the years is being well rounded in many aspects of whatever business I was involved with. I didn’t necessarily need to know every detail of every aspect of the business; but knowing enough of the different skillsets and “hats” in the business allowed me to solve problems that I otherwise would have never resolved without having to go through considerable efforts or pay considerable amounts of money to solve.
In my time as a marketing producer for big brands, this helps me coordinate between multiple teams, understand their functions well enough to get them what they needed while serving as bridge between departments to finalize large projects. It made me a critical piece to the company at that time.
In the current business I have; knowing the various aspects of audio, video and overall IT skillsets allows me to save the day in many moments when we are on site at events or in our studio creating. Anything can go wrong and knowing how each piece works makes troubleshooting and problem solving so much smoother. It’s great to be keyed in one skillset if your part of a larger team, but in smaller teams; having those various skillsets helps tremendously.
