Meet Eric Hughes

We recently connected with Eric Hughes and have shared our conversation below.

Eric, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I credit my resilience to a blend of experiences, innate qualities, and the formative environment of my upbringing. In my professional journey, tackling demanding projects has instilled in me the significance of adaptability and problem-solving. On a personal level, I’ve gleaned profound lessons in resilience by overcoming temptations, obstacles, and setbacks, buoyed by the guiding influence of faith. These experiences have fortified my determination and bounce-back capability. Moreover, having a supportive network comprising family, friends, mentors, and a positive spiritual outlook has played a pivotal role in nurturing my resilience.

This resilient mindset served as the catalyst propelling me to pen my memoir, “The Pursuit.”

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I currently serve as a Senior IT Consultant in Cyber Security for a Healthcare Organization, overseeing the management of clinical devices across the enterprise. My role involves harnessing the power of data analytics and reporting using Tableau—a potent tool that crafts dashboard visualizations. These visuals are pivotal in unraveling insights into potential cyber threats and vulnerabilities that could significantly impact patient care within our medical facilities.

Beyond my IT role, I also hold licenses as a Real Estate Broker in California, Nevada, and North Carolina, where my company, Hughes Realty, operates. With a wealth of experience spanning over 40 years in Real Estate Sales and Mortgage Banking, I offer clients comprehensive guidance in both Real Estate transactions and financing. This dual expertise enables me to support clients in navigating the entire homeownership process, ensuring a clearer understanding at every step.

Excitingly, I’m embarking on a new journey as an author, which fills me with immense enthusiasm for the opportunities ahead.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that were most impactful in my life was:

1. Work Ethic – Work ethic serves as a foundation for success and personal growth in various aspects of life. A strong work ethic often leads to achievement. When you’re committed to putting in consistent effort, it increases the likelihood of reaching your goals. This isn’t just limited to professional success but extends to personal accomplishments as well. It also teaches resilience. It helps in facing setbacks and challenges with determination and perseverance. This resilience is invaluable in bouncing back from failures and continuing to progress.

2. Consistency over Intensity – Start small and be consistent. It’s better to do a little bit every day than to push yourself too hard initially and burn out. Being consistent connected with following through until the end builds habits, and habits form a strong work ethic over time.

Set Clear Goals: He that fail to plan, plan to fail. Define your goals clearly. Having a roadmap helps you stay focused and motivated. Break down big goals into smaller, manageable tasks. This makes the workload seem less daunting and helps track progress more effectively.

3. Prioritization and Organization – Learn to prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency. Organize your workflow by using tools like to-do lists, calendars, or project management apps. This helps in staying on track and reduces stress. Also try to embrace Learning. Keep learning and improving your skills. The world is constantly changing, and being adaptable and open to learning new things is crucial. Continuous learning sharpens your abilities and keeps you relevant. Seek Feedback and Learn from your mistakes. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Instead, view them as opportunities to learn and grow. Ask for feedback from peers, mentors, or supervisors. Use this feedback constructively to improve.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful lesson from my parents centered on responsibility—an essential that extends beyond classroom teachings. It all starts with the mantra “do what your have to do so you can do what you want to do.” Understanding that employment sustains self-care is key. Being responsible involves handling bills and ensuring your income exceeds living expenses. Timely bill payments establish a robust credit history, unlocking opportunities to leverage credit towards achieving financial and lifestyle aspirations.
