We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Erica Coppola. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Erica below.
Erica , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Thank you so much for allowing me to share my story! My purpose has evolved into advocating and educating others on the importance of mental health and PMDD because I struggle with my mental health. It started when I was a teenager but my symptoms became even worse in 2020 when the pandemic started. I finally started tracking my symptoms and noticed an undeniable pattern each month. I went to my doctor for my yearly physical and explained some of the research that I found on Google about PMDD. As we talked it through, we discovered that I had all of the symptoms required for a diagnosis. That lightbulb moment finally clicked in my head!
I knew that receiving this diagnosis would not only help me finally put a name to what I have been suffering from for years, but I could also use this information to connect with and help other people who are suffering. When suffering from mental health issues, people might not always know where to turn to or how to help themselves or someone they know who is struggling in silence.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Of course! I am originally from Brooklyn, New York, and currently live in Staten Island. I am proud to be Italian-American. I was born on January 10th, 1993. I have always been into writing since elementary school. I always dreamed of writing a book and It was such a huge accomplishment of mine to self-publish my first book, “Ever Powerful”, in 2021. My life took a few detours(such as going to esthetician school and leaving college in 2012) I went back to college in 2016 and received my Associate’s Degree in Journalism in 2018 followed by my Bachelor’s Degree in Communications in 2021. I am currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Communications online while working towards finding my dream job and a new career path after working in advertising for two years. Spending time with family, and friends, advocating for mental health and PMDD awareness, and self-care are very important to me. I also love a good spa day, to shop, write, read, travel, and party.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say vulnerability, perseverance, and determination have helped me the most in my journey of becoming an advocate, blogger, and author. Trust me, the best is yet to come, and I am just getting started.! The best advice I could give is to just go for it, as cliche as that sounds, and know that you can help people just by being yourself.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always interested in connecting with people who are passionate about mental health, women’s health, and PMDD awareness like myself. Having a sense of community and joining a PMDD support group online has helped me so much since my official diagnosis. If you are a writer, fellow advocate, or just simply want to connect with me and like the work that I am doing, my email address is [email protected] I look forward to hearing from you!
We are always even more powerful together <3
