We recently connected with Erica King and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erica, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I think I’ve always had the capability to withstand difficulties. Perhaps it is related to my ability to look beyond the present challenges and focus on possibilities that equip me with the ability to bounce back, recover, and rely on my inner strength. I can recall during my time filming the Torrid Model Search series that, whether it was the productions plans or the attitudes of individuals, I was put through what one would seem to associate with a sorority hazing. For example, my hair wasn’t right, my skin color wasn’t right. I was either too serious or too bubbly. I was told I was too “ethnic” or not ”urban” enough. At any rate they were all games by mean girls to mess with my head in an effort to throw me off my game. What they did not realize was that I was prepared from birth to know who I am and to recognize the strengths, abilities, and talents that God placed inside of me. So anytime I was faced with adversity, my thoughts would go to how to plan, strategize, and execute a way through the obstacle. I am a born fighter and my eye was always on what I needed to get accomplished rather than suffocate in the difficulty.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I love and embrace the understanding of my many layers. As a public figure, my brand includes singing, modeling, fashion, makeup, public speaking, and philanthropy. I ventured out on promoting my artistry in makeup and recently showcased my business at the bridal show in Dallas, Tx. It has afforded me several clients which has kept me at a fast pace. I noticed that many people paused their nuptials during the covid season but now they have resumed plans and I am thankful to be included in their life changing plans. I started my own business at the age of 28 , Magic Makeup by Erica King where my mission is to ” Enhance the beauty within.” As an independent traveling makeup artist, I attribute my success to an excellent work ethic, skill, technique, and marketing. Although I am an established makeup artist, it’s important to always update your technique. The world of beauty is competitive so I keep myself updated to current trends. I enjoy the beauty industry and the opportunity to work with wonderful clients. I have been a part of runway, television, magazine and film. Each having its own reward. Moving forward , I look forward to merging beauty and artistry into the many layers that speaks ERICA KING. I anticipate many ventures, some monetary and others relational. I am in conversations relating to the branches of Erica King Worldwide. As with any new venture it takes to cultivate, but as they culminate, I will keep you apprised.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Oh wow lol…Staying focused, staying motivated, and finding your own niche and sticking to it. Being able to recognize that things don’t come easy is only the beginning. Worrying and focusing on other businesses and other people who distract you with their own successes can be detrimental to you because it takes you away from working on your own journey and it may cause you to want to replicate others rather than appreciate your authenticity. REFOCUS ! Get back to you and speak positively to yourself during the development stages. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Remember everyone makes mistakes. That’s how you grow. That’s actually how you find your niche. By allowing yourself the freedom to create and appreciate your passion. Then, allow it to make money for you!
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
To be completely transparent, I am desperately trying to stay positive in a negative culture. Social media is wonderful for marketing but it can be detrimental to my emotional and mental state of being. Especially when there doesn’t seem to be enough positivity to offset the negative content. The challenge is maintaining the balance between work and self care. Social media can take away
