Meet Erika Moret

We recently connected with Erika Moret and have shared our conversation below.

Erika, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.

Being a photographer, I spend a lot of hours sitting down editing. It can sometimes lead to eye fatigue and back pain. However, I’m fortunate enough to have a velcro dog who likes to go outside every 1-2 hours, so he reminds me when it’s time for a good stretch and some sunlight. I also like to set scheduled hours for work, self care, and relaxation during busy seasons.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a wedding and lifestyle photographer based in SoCal. I’ve always been a creative working in the entertainment industry but I picked up a camera 5 years ago and couldn’t put it down. I started out taking headshots for my friends but was fortunate enough to second shoot a couple of weddings and knew immediately that I needed to be where the love was. I’m a sap for love stories and capturing unique connections through my documentary style photography. Whether it be a love story, new family chapter, passion project or creative self expression. I want nothing more than to create a safe, comfortable space where my clients are free to be themselves and can relive the memories for a lifetime.

Stay tuned on my socials as I will be launching a holiday promotion in November for couples/family photos, just in time for holiday cards.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

3 skills that have made an impact on me are awareness, perseverance, and creativity.

1. Being in tune with my couples feelings and needs is very important to me. Every couple is different and I want their special day to be everything they imagined and authentic to their relationship. Outside of their emotions, I never want to miss a shot, so spacial awareness is key for me capturing special moments that might be happening behind me.

2. I’m the type of person that loves and thrives having a mentor or teacher. Freelance photography has been a self taught journey for me and I’ve had my moments of struggle and doubt. However, pushing through my frustrations and challenges has helped me unlock new skills and confidence in myself.

3. I love to get creative and collaborate with my clients. Love looks different for everyone and I want my photos to reflect that.

My advice for beginner photographers would be to stay curious and be active. Learn as much as you can. YouTube can be your best friend, and get out and shoot anything and everything. 🙂

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

My parents are incredible and they’ve always supported me and my dreams. It may sound simple but it’s anything but! I’ve always been a creative and travelled the less traditional route. I love making art, whether it be photography, music, or acting. They’ve always championed me and means the world.
