We recently connected with Erika Rose and have shared our conversation below.
Erika , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
When I first moved to Vegas my dream was to be one of the top photographers in the city which I’ve accomplished. However, I did face many obstacles. When I first moved here I was robbed my car was stolen, wallet, everything I had but my camera, and my dog. I quickly realized those two things, and the support of my family/ friends is all I need. I’ve always been the type of person to keep going. My mother would say it comes from my stubbornness, but I’ve never been the type of person to give up. I believe giving up, or failure of any form just isn’t an option if you want something out of life you have to keep going.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a celebrity photographer, I’m known for shooting a lot of women which I absolutely love. My brand is very much about helping women to feel their absolute best. I love supporting other women. Lately I have been shooting men more which I’m loving specifically Rick Ross who is an amazing person. I’m very grateful for him letting me to be able to work with him. It’s helped to be able to diversify my portfolio I’m looking forward to shooting more performers. The energy of a show, and shooting in a studio is completely different. I’m definitely going to be shooting a lot more artists, and looking into getting into film work now that Hollywood is expanding to Las Vegas.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In order to be a successful photographer you need to be a good business person. Most creatives relay on talent, but when you’re in business, you’re in business to make money. You also need to be a good people person. The clients wants, and needs are important. In order to get the best images of a person they need to be comfortable with you, and connect with you. This way they let their guard down and you get the photo you need. Lastly you need to be comfortable with rejection with people not loving your work with people telling you no, but you have to believe in yourself enough to never stop.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I read a lot of Robert Greene specifically the 40 laws of power, and The Art of Seduction. These books have helped me move appropriately when it comes to business, and understanding others. Law one for example “never outshine the master” I apply this to my own career when working with celebrities you can be good at your job, but I maintain my place and let the star shine. It’s important to know your place, and play your role accordingly.
