We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erika Tymann a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Erika, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Optimism I found is a choice. I found that I am most optimistic when I spend time with myself, my own thoughts and feelings. The constant input from the outside world had me questioning myself and feeling depressed about life, constantly comparing myself to other people. My optimism comes from the constant choice to put myself first, to take care of me, mind, body, spirit. This practice gives me a clearer lens of life and the ability to hold the positives and negatives in balance.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
With a background in linguistic education, communication is a pillar in my life. Growing up in a family who did not communicate well, I learned most of my expression out of necessity. Beyond spoken words, I began to explore the conversation that can be had through art, visual arts, healing arts, and writing.
My current focus is a study of water colors, holding space for deep reflection, and writing my journey as a woman dedicated to conscious conception.
The most exciting part of my current creativity is that it is all connect, while still unique in their individual expression, there are over lapping threads of self acceptance and evolution.
It feels to me, that my purpose is to live authentically, be a living example of loving myself in the dark and the light.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Listening, discernment, and reflection are three skills that were pivotal in my journey.
When you can be fully open to listening, you will find your answer, many times in unexpected words.
There is so much out there, so many people saying this and that, pulling at your attention and energy. Discernment is a key skill, to know who and what is worth/deserving of your attention and energy. It is currency greater than money.
Consistent reflection through writing and conversation with my closest people have been essential to keep my mind focused and clear on my truest path.
My advice, you probably do these skills in your own way. Acknowledge the work that you are already doing, give yourself the credit, and the ways to grow will become clear.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I’m currently working on slowing down. Living in NYC area, life seems to always be on high speed.
It is challenging for me to find the slower pace that I desire. The mornings that seem to linger on with creative fun, the afternoons that consist of doing nothing but filling your cup. The days where the clock does not dictate how I move.
The “easy” solution for me is to change my scenery! Go on vacation. And inevitably I come back to the high speed, calling for me to work on my inner clock, changing my own frequency.
