Meet Erin Alexander

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Erin Alexander. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Erin below.

Erin, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from my childhood experiences and the incredible strength I witnessed in my mother. When I was young, our family moved from Indiana to Washington state to escape abusive relationships. My mom, a single mother of four, picked up her entire life and moved us across the country with limited resources. We didn’t even have a reliable car; it broke down in Chicago, forcing us to continue our journey on a Greyhound bus.

In Washington, I saw my mom working tirelessly to provide for us. Despite the challenges, she went back to school at the community college, becoming the first person in her family to ever go to college and later the first to buy a home. Watching her perseverance taught me that you never stop, you never give up. When things get hard, you try again or find a new way. Her strength and determination instilled in me the resilience I carry with me today.

In my business, “You are resilient” is one of my personal mantras. I even have a sticker with this phrase right on the edge of my desk as a constant reminder. Being a business owner isn’t always easy. I’ve faced clients issuing chargebacks because they didn’t like me, spent 10 days in the ICU after surgery complications, navigated the challenges of the pandemic, and dealt with countless other seemingly impossible situations.

Each day, I remind myself that I am resilient. Even if today I’ve been knocked flat on my back, I’ll stand up tomorrow. This mindset keeps me going, no matter what obstacles come my way.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m the creator of Product Powerhouse, a web design agency and educational resource for product-based business owners. As a Shopify Expert, I help small business owners learn how to leverage the power of Shopify to grow their businesses. My work involves designing websites and providing education on using Shopify. I also host a podcast for product-based businesses where I share tips and chat with other store owners and experts about their business journeys.

Right now, I’m most excited about the courses I offer, especially the complete overhaul of my signature program, DIY SHOP(ify). This program teaches people how to design their own e-commerce websites using Shopify. I created my programs for those who want to learn to DIY their website and marketing. Teaching others about the powerful Shopify platform and helping small business owners achieve their dreams is incredibly fulfilling for me.

I believe there is so much untapped potential out there, especially among women and mothers. Being a small business owner changed my life, and I love helping others experience the same transformation. Whether it’s through web design, educational resources, or my podcast, my goal is to empower small business owners to realize their full potential and achieve their dreams.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, three qualities that were most impactful in my journey are resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn.

Resilience: Life and business are full of challenges, but resilience has helped me navigate through them. My advice for developing resilience is to embrace challenges as learning opportunities. Remember that setbacks are temporary, and every obstacle is a chance to grow stronger. Surround yourself with supportive people who can lift you up during tough times.

Adaptability: The ability to adapt and be flexible has been crucial, especially as a working mom. It’s so important to stay curious and open-minded in life and business. Keep an eye on industry trends and be willing to pivot when necessary. Don’t be afraid to try new things and step out of your comfort zone from time to time.

Be Willing to Learn: The desire to learn and grow has been a cornerstone of my success. For those early in their journey, my advice is to never stop learning. Invest in courses, attend workshops, and stay updated with the latest industry news. Seek out mentors and connect with others in your field. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the better equipped you’ll be to handle whatever comes your way. This doesn’t always have to be in a paid capacity either, listen to podasts, read the books, and go on YouTube.

By focusing on these areas, you can build a strong foundation for your business and personal growth. Embrace the journey with an open heart and mind, and remember that every step, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goals.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

My ideal client is a passionate and driven small business owner who is eager to grow their product-based business. They have a clear vision for their brand but may need guidance on how to effectively translate that vision into an engaging and functional online store.

They are open to learning new skills and strategies to enhance their business. They appreciate the power of knowledge and are excited about using tools like Shopify to their fullest potential.

They have a strong sense of what they want to achieve with their business. They are dedicated to their products and brand and are motivated to see their business thrive.

I love working with clients who are not just looking for a quick fix but are invested in building a sustainable, long-term business. They are excited about leveraging the power of Shopify and are enthusiastic about learning how to DIY their website and marketing. These clients inspire me with their dedication and passion, and I am thrilled to help them achieve their dreams.
