We recently connected with Erin Goldman and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is one of the most beautiful things in the world because it means always getting up after you’ve fallen down. I think if theres one thing that is guaranteed in this life, it is that there will be always be ups and downs. If you stay down, it means that you’ve accepted defeat and I’m a fighter with a warrior’s spirit who has never particularly been fond of doing that. I believe it’s about perspective, because even if you get “knocked down”, there’s a lesson to be learned in the experience and the resilience appears the moment you decide to invest in yourself and overcome that struggle. For me personally, I have always struggled with my career. I am turning 35 at the end of this month and am nowhere near where I thought I would be. I thought I would be financially stable and owning my own home but instead I am living at home and starting a brand new venture from scratch in my career. When I started out, I chose to study theatre arts and had dreams of becoming an actress, a notoriously difficult profession. After hearing “no” more than I could count, I decided to lean into the family business which was real estate. Although I didn’t hear the word “no” as much in that profession, my heart just wasn’t into it. It led me to begin a career in social media which has knocked me down numerous times. The first time I had to take a break for three years because I couldn’t control my ability to compare my behind the scenes to everyone else’s highlight reels. And now I am in the midst of another rut and hurdle battling algorithm changes, lower engagement, and burn-out but instead of being hard on myself and deciding to give up on my dreams and potential, I use these opportunities to switch it up, and try something brand new. That is resilience and that is how I believe we gain our confidence and learn to grow.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Erin Ashley Goldman and I’m a social media content creator. I’d say my personality is a mixture between Minnie Mouse and Glinda the Good but with a little bit of edge thrown in. I was born and raised in Los Angeles by a powerful, loving and supportive single mother who I am incredibly close with. I grew up in Beverly Hills and was always involved in the arts and performed around the house every chance I got. However, I struggled deeply with my mental health ever since I was little. Despite living with anxiety and depression I went on the get a degree in theatre arts from UC Irvine, work at Disneyland, have an eight year career in property management, earn my red sash in Kung Fu and start my own brand and business called “Iridescent Scarab.” Although being present on social media offers a lot of challenges, I believe that my purpose in this lifetime is to spread joy and change the world in a positive way. Using my platform to connect with others is how I have the opportunity to do that and I also use it to assure people that not only are they not alone in their struggles, but they are incredibly powerful and capable in spite of them. I am currently making an exciting new step in my career by starting a brand new Youtube channel focusing more on long form lifestyle content, with the intention on building a strong community.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three most impactful skills and qualities I’ve learned on my journey are resilience, creating a personal tool kit for when things get rough, and having so much self-love that you have ability to be your own number one fan. I firmly believe that our journeys are more nuanced and complex than how neat and put together society makes it seem if you follow the path of going to school, getting a degree, then a job, then a home, then a family. I believe that people change and so do their paths and interests. In a lot of ways, although I have over ten years experience in my profession of content creation, I am going through a big period of change with it right now, so much so that I also feel like I am just starting out. This is because I am evolving. I hope that if anyone is early on their journey and just starting out that they never lose the ability to root for themselves when things take an unexpected turn. And that they always have tools in their toolbox for when this does happen. For me its being creative. Whether thats making content on social media or going to a dance class or seeing a show or even listening to music. Ultimately, I think that the most important thing is to keep going, be open and unafraid to pivot in a complete different direction, and see where your beautiful and unique journey leads you without judging yourself if it didn’t lead to where you thought it was going to be. Sometimes things can turn out even better than we had hoped and there are brilliant paths for us that we couldn’t have even imagined!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
As a hypersensitive person with generalized anxiety disorder, I am often more overwhelmed than not. This can range from sensory overload, to simply trying something new, to having too much on my plate. All of these things trigger me and my initial response is paralysis. Because of this, I had to learn to develop coping skills so that I don’t rely on just shutting down every time something gets difficult. What I like to do the most to combat overwhelm is make lists, because it makes me feel more in control. I do this on my phone in the notes app. I’ll write out everything I have to do in order of importance and then when I cross something off the list, I get a dopamine hit. Next, I’ll cancel any plans I have in order to stay in with a warm cup of tea to watch my comfort show and I’ll also make sure to meditate. Getting overwhelmed easily and being hypersensitive means you are more likely to have to take more steps than the average person in order to feel “normal” but why strive for normalcy when you were born to be extraordinary? It is a huge gift to feel that deeply to be so in tune. Lastly, never underestimate the healing ability of crying. Sometimes that is the best, most honest and most freeing way to deal with overwhelm.
