We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erin Rose Raduazo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin Rose, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I would say without a doubt my work ethic came from the example set by those in my family. I was raised by a single mother and single grandmother who were two of the hardest working people I have ever met in my life. Throughout my life my mom always had multiple jobs in order to make ends meet and to build a life for her and I. She worked a full time job during the day and often worked nights and weekends in the food and bev industry for extra income. My grandmother often babysat me, she grew up in the great depression on a farm and worked for many years doing hard physical labor in a book-binding factory. Both of them set an incredible example of what hard work really meant, and to never give up. Throughout my working career I have always been eager to learn more and as quickly as possible with the hopes of always being able to do more and do better.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Here in Charleston I focus on offering maternity, newborn and family portrait photography. While I know my industry is fairly saturated, I feel what sets me apart from my competition is my years of experience, my amazing work ethic, and my promise of great service to my clients. I have worked in this industry professionally for over 15 years so I am not only able to provide clients with a great experience during their session that is easy, fun, and efficient but also one that provides a quality final product that they will cherish for generations to come. My clients know exactly what to expect from the planning and preparation of their session to the delivery of their gallery and heirlooms. The quality of my work and the over the top customer service is what my clients expect and return for year after year.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think having a solid base on photography from a technical standpoint was the first skill I built upon. Knowing how to create an image with proper lighting, proper posing, and learning to adjust your camera for every scenario is really where it begins. From there I would say the two most important things are how to brand and market yourself, and how to run a profitable business. The creative side of a photography business is really on one third of it. Learning more about different avenues of marketing and branding is what will get your business going and knowing how to be profitable between your expenses and your salary are what sustains it.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
There are a number of books that have played a significant role in forming my business minded self and really helped shape my business from sustainable to profitable. Author Mike Michalowicz wrote the books Profit First, The Pumpkin Plan and Fix This Next. All three of these books have really guided me through my business from how to problem solve, what clients I really wanted to focus on serving, to how I could actually pay myself AND have money in my business for expenses. Sometimes we think we have to serve every client and take every job just because it’s there, especially when you first start your business. You’ll certainly learn many lessons that way, but after reading The Pumpkin Plan I realized that serving a niche client was actually the key to both my marketing and my booming business. And after reading Profit First I learned why so many businesses, especially the creative ones fail. Learning to manage your business money and pricing yourself to be profitable isn’t as scary as it sounds, and once you have that simple mindset in place it comes much more naturally.
