We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Estephani a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Estephani, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
In any room I walk into, I always try my best to meet and introduce myself to everyone. It’s impossible to form deep connections with every person in the room. But those brief interactions — even just a smile, a greeting, or a question about someone’s day — can make a huge impact! You’d be surprised how much that simple act of asking about someone’s well-being can mean to them.
It’s easy to feel out of place when you’re the only one who looks like you, but I’ve learned that the key to feeling comfortable and successful in these situations lies in kindness and openness.
Don’t be afraid of rejection or awkward interactions, it’s apart of life, I’ve gone through my fair share of rejection for the simplest of things and interactions, not everyone can handle the act of kindness!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Thank you for being apart of the journey!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Consistency on practicing your craft including the “small stuff” like singing, writing, and performing even if it’s just you in your room! Not everything that you create is going to be perfect, it’s about enjoying the good and BAD!
Just make sure to stay true to what you like and everything else will fall in place, their truly is in audience for everybody!
Don’t let numbers or lack of attention from others demotivate you we all face these things and if you don’t congratulations!
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
It depends on your goals. Going all in on your strengths allows you to maximize your talents and stand out in your field. However, improving weaker areas can make you resilient in different situations. A balanced approach—leveraging strengths while addressing key weaknesses that might hold you back—often leads to the best results. The key is knowing which weaknesses matter and which can be compensated for by doubling down on what you do best.
In my own experience I’ve been told you could be super talented but hard work and consistency will over power talent because a lot more people are talented then hard working.
