Meet Et Mathews

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Et Mathews. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with ET below.

Hi ET, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

Realizing and trusting that there’s only on true ‘me’

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I have been producing records & songwriting (credits include records from MALIA, Meredith Parks, Joshua Mathews) spanning from North Carolina to Southern California (R&B, Indie Rock, Folk, Americana, Country) since 2013.

I also been performing as a guitar/bass player for touring acts of friends since then too.

In 2018, I started releasing songs for a solo project as Tomahawk Baby, which are essentially passion project home recordings that have found their way onto streaming platforms (and soon-to-be physicals). After a string of Tomahawk Baby singles, I released the Tomahawk Baby “SHAME” EP in April of 2024, which was a seven song project that can be categorized as Alt-Country & proudly my most honest work to date. Three indie rock songs kick it off (All in All, For The Better, Give It Time), with a stripped back acoustic grunge record (Not Me) splitting the middle, and three traditional country songs (Blue Eyes, Going Through, Shame) round out the EP. All written and recorded at my home studio, save for a few isolated piano recordings that were tracked at Furaha Sound in Los Angeles.

Since SHAME, I have been working on the next TB project, “The Tustin Tapes: Sad Songs, Love Songs & Other Collected Works” with the fuzzed out single “Can I” being the first release. Followed by “I Like You” which is a nod to slacker rock and serves as a love letter the very familiar feeling of the simple things.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

My first piece of advice would be to follow your intuition.
Secondly, cliche, but write what you know.
Finally, be kind to everyone.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

I am a big fan of ‘Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah’ by Richard Bach, which is basically a story about a Mentor-Student relationship between two pilots where one pilot teaches the other how to perform ‘miracles’.
Under the guise of flying & airplane mechanics/maintenance, one of the main characters learns that there is much more to ourselves and potential than we realize.
