Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Etienne Warnery. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Etienne, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Maybe it will sound a little cliché, but I have been drawn to photography for a long time, just like many other passionate hobbyists. I painted a lot when I was a kid, but I realized that I liked the idea of creating an image in an instant with photography. Also, I figured out that I love using it as a way to document the life around me, share it with the people I love, and create albums for them.
Originally, I was a mechanical engineer. During my studies, I took many classes on creating a business. I dreamed of establishing my own company from time to time. Life went by, and I decided to change from my engineering job to do photography. It was a way for me to join my creative, artistic mind with my more logical side of creating a business. I was at a point in my life where I wanted to be in charge of my own destiny. I found a way to make people happy, as much by sharing joyful, common experiences as by creating valuable photographs that are true to their personality, and therefore meaningful to them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a candid, documentary wedding photographer. My specialty is catching authentic moments for people as they enjoy their special day. During a wedding, I like documenting the little and big times that transcribe how the day went by, and that showcase my couple’s personality. It is a photojournalistic approach that attracts me the most during a wedding.
For engagement photos and couples’ pictures during the wedding, it is a little different. I like to create situations that my couples will enjoy, or will have an intimate moment with, because I have found that this makes for the most authentic love and laughter images.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first quality that is the most helpful for me now is having an artistic eye. Maybe some of this I was born with, but I have also spent countless hours taking photos and trying new things, analyzing other people’s work, reading books, taking classes, and watching videos. I am not scared of making mistakes or bad pictures because I know it is part of the creative process.
Second, I have taken many classes on the business side of photography. I have a mentor that created a successful photography studio in California. It is extremely helpful to have feedback from him, and learn from other people’s experiences.
Third, I think I have a personality that fits well with the job. I like people, I am happy when I am interacting with them, and I like to learn their story. My clients say that I am easy going, always smiling, energetic, and make people at ease and laugh.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My number one obstacle right now is getting known by brides and grooms. People that are able to find me always love my work and the experience they have with me, but I am relatively new to the area. I was born and raised in France, so almost all of my family and friends are in France still. To overcome this challenge, I have focused my attention on three strategies. The first is that I am constantly improving my website and taking actions to increase my ranking in search engines. Next, I am doing a lot of networking with the Kansas City wedding vendor community. Finally, I am using Instagram as my presence on social media.
